is the RTS genre dying out?

I may be a bit geeky, but me and my friends tend to hang out sometime during the week and play PC games trough LAN.

We have Age of Empires II/III/Online, Battle for Middle Earth, and C&C:Red Alert...i think those are it.

Anyways we been trying to find new games to download. It seems that all the good RTS are from 2008 or earlier. I don't think there has been any good RTS games.

Are the ages of RTS over? FPS from now on forward? I don't know. Any opinions in this matter? Also any recommendations for me and my friends ? As long as the game supports 3 players it's good. We rarely get the entire gang to get together.
Would this belong under gaming discussion or chillout room?

Well you are missing the biggest RTS game, StarCraft II. Now I'm not much of a SC guy myself.

Actually, I still play an RTS game from 1997. Total Annihilation. TA is probably the "Best" RTS game ever made. There are still a few sites making 3rd party addons to the original game.

But, unfortunately yes, they are a dying breed of games. Most gaming has gone the way of the FPS, but thats because all the studios & devs can make alot of money on them. Most of the devs don't care about games as much as "How" much they can make? Activison, EA, Valve...are all culprits in this. I personally miss the late 90's-07' games. I really love plat-formers & adventure games, but they just don't make those anymore. I mean I love Jak & dakster, Ratchet & clank, God of War, ect. Its just the way games go. Eventually they will get over-saturated with FPS games and people will stop buying, then devs will start making them.

This exact reason is why I haven't bought a new game for my 360 since Mass Effect 2/Halo Reach. Just the times my friend...gaming was at its height 5-10yrs ago. I personally think its in a terrible rut right now. I'm only looking forward to 2 games this year....Mass Effect 3 & Halo 4. It sucks to be a gamer right now. Especially if you like RTS games.(ME)

I've been on a Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance kick (if you got a beefy gaming rig it's decent), but yeah, the RTS scene looks pretty uninspiring. You could try Civilization 5 (turn based though) but I find it a tad slow for my tastes.

Don't get me started on the space sim scene...

I also liked the Civ Series, im currently Playing Civ 5. like it was mentioned it is turned based but its a nice chance of pace.
