For Crysis it is on the low side. Crysis is a CPU and GPU intensive game. Anything below a quad core is not going to run Crysis all that well.
Note: This is coming from soneone who ran Crysis on his Athlon 64 x2 6000+ with an 8800GT video card. I could only get Medium graphics, and at times it lagged so much that I had to throw it down to low.
Technically I didn't specify what kind of cpu intensive game it was, so therefore technically I'm not incorrect. I just didn't specify.
I've seen a Quad Core choke to death on bioshock, a far less cpu/gpu intensive game (w/ 8800GT)
so i think digi-roni is correct in his statement. 4 cores doesnt mean squat, unless it has the bawls to match (pun intended)

I ran crysis (demo..I'm not much of a gamer) on my rig 'full tilt', and it never even so much as burped.
Of course I have to temper this as it was on the XP partition.
And this is on a a lowly lil C2D..
Of course running it at 4.2Ghz with 8GB(total..but unseen by XP) of memory pumping thru a GTX280 helps..

Also, at the OP, no one is running Crysis on high with no lag with an 8600gt, unless you mean a smooth 15fps on a low res. Just upgrade your card, 9800gtx's are cheap now.
And idk if anyone mentioned this, but the 9800s where mostly slighty tweaked newer 8800 models(G92 chipset), so don't just go by the numbers/letters, do your research first. Nvidia tries to trick people with that stuff. Also your comp is good enough to run most games on high if you get a decent card, Crysis is just super demanding. Don't plan on maxing it out unless you want to drop a lot of money.
Like people said, your not gonna see any difference with more vram. The 8600 isn't fast enough to use that much. Also 8600 pretty much sucks for a x600 card. The 7600 was good, the 9600 was good and I think the 6600 was good, but the 8600 really dropped the ball. So I strongly advise getting a new card like a 9600 or 9800 when you have the money.
