    Standalone Game

I think I posted this once before and didn't get an answer. I am noob to games so I don't really know what I want. I would like to have a game that you do not have to connect to the internet to play it. I want to stay away from Steam and those types of servers. Is it possible to buy a game such as that.

I like first person shooter types and the like. My specs will give you some idea of what my hardware can handle.

Borderlands (2009) is a pretty decent game, and I don't think it requires any special programs like Steam. Borderlands is a mix of FPS and RPG. Borderlands uses the item ranking system of WoW (Common items are White, uncommons are Green, Rares are Blue, Epics are Purple, Legendarys are Orange, and one more above that is Teal).

I forgot to mention that you can also play online for free with other players up to 4. And each player in the game makes the enemies tougher, and the loot better. You can choose between 4 different classes: Siren, Soldier, Hunter and Brick. Each one has it's own abilities and skills.

Most, Borderlands included, will require a internet connection at least once due to DRM.

I believe it uses SecuROM, although I could be mistaken. Double check on it.
So, just as it would be with Steam, you need to be online the first time you launch the game to activate it. After that, no internet connection is required.

This isn't that uncommon. Most Digital platforms work the same way, just a different type if DRM.

    One Time

One time is not a problem. I just don't want to have to connedt to some server to play the game. As I said I am not really a gamer. I want to see how my new rig runs.

    Ah, I see.

The only time you would need to connect to a server would be a MMO or any Online type play.
Most single player games will not require it, whether its from Steam, retail DVD, or other Digital download. Just the first time launch for activation.
After that you can go offline
