thack3r Your best solution is to simply uninstall HL2 while saving things like game saves, etc. once you log out of Steam. The problem is mostly game driver related with a few game files corrupted.

Once you have it removed you log back in and bring up the main library, news screen and go into the games screen. You should see HL2 not install with a button to reinstall the game. That should be able to clean all this up for you.

The option there will download and install fresh game files from the Valve servers. Once you have it on again lower the screen resolution setting in the game itself down a notch. You may want to download the redistributable package for DX 9 Full and run the installer for that as well to refresh the 9c drivers if you had previously installed DX 9. If not the game is mainly DX 9 dependent.

If you are running an older ATI card NetFramework 2.0 is a requirement while 3.5 is the new minimum you would want on before going with the latest 4.0. The Windows updates should have already seen the 3.5 version installed by now anyways eliminating any worry about that being any problem.

It's far better buy anything Steam online rather then ever finding you can't install more then once from disk! if you should need to reinstall Windows for any reason. At least they won't close your acount if you don't have a jpeg to toss at support and the games menu will see the install button for each one you originally had when logging in for the first time on a clean install.

All that plus the far better pricing for online purchases over buying in a retail store no doubt. Plus older games like that would be seeing large price drop for the 2005 game to begin with. Nothing heard still on EP Three however for HL2 until now and still waitingggggggg... Half Life 2: Episode Three hits its sixth anniversary

It is so cheap these days there is no reason to pirate HL2.

    This.

Also keep in mind the Summer Sale should start this month, probably towards to the end.
When that sale starts, you can get the Half Life games super cheap. And by super cheap, It wouldn't surprise me to see them go for $5 or less. And the Orange Box would be really cheap as well.

Depending on the events they have going, you may even get it for free (Legally) just for participating in the Summer Event.

Heck, during the Winter Sale, I got Left For Dead 2 free. Already had it and just gave it to a friend though.

Steam does 2 major events like this per year. A Sumemr one, usually in June and a Winter one in Dec.
Then there are a couple smaller versions of it as well. That how I buy the majority of my games. I just save back $$$ and when they sales start, buy a bunch of things I want cheap. Then, play those till next sale, unless something really great I want comes out before then. Like Skyrim did.
