GPU problems wouldn't shut down your PC as far as I know. I have the same issues where my GPU is constantly overheating and works at a minimum 70șC; when it reaches the top critical temperature (around 90șC) the graphics just start to fail, but the PC never shuts down by itself. In certain scenarios it freezes the OS completely, but never shuts down.

if all the video card stats are in the green, there is some other problem to be identified.

Heat is usually a common problem, but your machine was OK and running!
Though there must be some malfunction, either in your hardware or software config, which we (I ;-) ) do not see.
I re-installed my graphic drivers once again and opted for an earlier version instead of the latest - and to my surprise - no shut down! Very pleased. I am still going to order the replacement PSU, as I would like to extend the life of this for as long as possible. Many thanks to both of you for helping me resolve it.
