How do I install GTA: Vice City on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit?

    Hi to all...

    It's my first post.

    Specifications of my PC:

    1. Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

    2. My Processor: AMD FX 4100 Quad-Core Processor

    3. RAM: 4 GB (3.75 GB Usable).

    4. My Graphic Card and its size: 2 GB ATI Radeon 3000 Graphics Card

I've recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from Windows XP SP 2.
I want to install GTA: Vice City on my PC.
But I'm facing a problem of incompatible 16 bit applications.
I've a legal setup of game, given by my friend. (I don't think, legal or illegal matters in this issue.)

It was working with no problems on Windows XP.
When I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, It was already
on other drive and I was able to run it but faced too much problems. I uninstalled it because mouse was not working properly and many more other problems were there...

Whenever I attempt to re-install it, it runs perfectly for a while then a command prompt appears and shows the files being extracted.

After extracting some files, it shows this message: "This item is incompatible with 64-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate. You need 32 (x86) of 64 bit (x64) version of the application" or similar.

It shows this message for every item. But somehow the game gets installed and then open it and it doesn't start at all.
A black screen comes and minimizes, and then shows "Unhandled Exception" error. Then the game gets closed. I've re-installed two times but the problem still exists.

Is there any technique for installing this game on a 64-bit Operating System?

    Thanks...

You stated in this thread that the CD you have isn't the original, so therefore points to it being pirated:

If you want to play it, then just buy it on Steam for £6 where it's guaranteed to install and play on 64 bit.

I asked my friend about it and he said it is original CD-ROM. Then I posted here. But you guys are right. I think that CD is for 32-bit operating systems. I'll buy CD for 64-bit.

Thank you for your help. :)

Sigh, ankur850 does not know what he is talking about. There is no 64 bit exe for Vice City, let alone the majority of games released today. The CD you have is the one everyone has.

Now, to fix the mouse issue, run Vice City in Win 98 compatibility mode. Please list any other problems you face running the game. Thanks. Btw, it runs fine on my W7 64-bit laptop.

@everlong - Steam does not take games that don't work so well in today's OS' and make them work well, they usually sell them as is, unless of course the developer made it work properly. GOG does though ensure their games work well in today's OS'. Anyways, the Steam version of Vice City is actually similar to the retail version, only the game patched to work without a CD.

    Thanks but...

I'm not talking about the mouse problem...
I can't even install the Vice City.

Is there any solution for it?

Do you get any errors or something while trying to install Vice City? The installer runs fine on my computer. Have you tried running the installer on another computer?

No. I've not yet tried to run it on other 64-bit OS.
You'll know yourself what type of errors I'm getting...just read the first post of the thread...

Error message: "This 16-bit item is incompatible with the 64-bit version of Windows. You need a 32-bit or 64-bit version of this file. Please contact this item's manufacturer." or similar....

I'm planning to install Windows XP Virtual Machine/Mode.
I'll try installing the game after installing that VM.
I actually want to run Turbo C++ IDE through that Virtual Machine , not especially for Vice City..

    Thanks anyway...
