Installed diablo 2 and expantion pack, a few problems first when I click on the desk top icon it takes a full five min. for the game to start it just stays on the desk top and while waiting I go the ttask manager and it is not there but it will start after 5 min.!!
I noticed this when playing in full screen mode. Putting the -w flag in the shortcut target to make it run in windowed mode ran it instantly.
Tried running it in XP compatibility mode?
Also try the D2SE launcher, really good for mods as well as graphics.
I am running it in compat. mode now didn't help. what is D2SE launcher?

Just a 3rd party app (you won't get banned on Bnet for it, it's just stores .dll files) that allows you to launch D2 from a control panel. Also a lot easier for installing mods (I play Median XL, lots more fun than LoD imo).
I used it as well. I haven't played the game in a few months (I installed a really kickass mods in the D2SE mod manager), and it ran fine for me.
