Yeah I fixed it using #9 from the list above. Easy.

However, my game has been crashing a lot lately... I might try reinstalling it.

    I play online on voobly.

    Palettestealer Suspender

Hey guys, I see you are having the same issues I use to have. I found a program one day that helps remove distorted colors. Download Palettestealer Suspender in the link below.

    http://www.age-of-empires.net/downlo...rSuspender.zip

    extract the folder
    then open up palettestealer suspender
then click browse and locate your Aoe2 or AoC exe. file.
    then click open
    click start game
and the distorted images will be gone
    gameplay will be regular

Also works with Aoe, Aoe Rise of Rome, Aoe 2 Aok, and Aoe2 CE

    Enjoy!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

    ENJOY:D:D:D:D:D:D

it seems i have the exact same problem as medievalman... i use a windows 7 home premium 32bit and its alien-ware desktop. When i launch the exspansion version (conquerors) after the luancher loads and the screen goes black for the sec for the cinemetrics i get that same exact message: "aoe II expansion has stopped working windows is checking to find a solution" ect ect.

As for my non expansion version (age of kings) the colors are kinda distorted (when i go into map editor the green grass has this lime-green stuff on it). also i dont think my drivers are up to date but i wont get them unless i dont have to buy them. i do have radeon and geforce and latest direct x. also this game worked on my old os which is a windows hp/xp.

    so any suggestions?

EDIT: seems closing the explored does nothing, i used a few of the programs listed above and still nothing.

This might fix the other error too, but it will definitely get rid of the weird colors:

    1) Open Task Manager
    2) Start the game
    3) In Task Manager, end the explorer.exe process by right-clicking it and then left-click End Process - then left-click End Process again to confirm it.
    4) Beat the snot out of the Saracens (or whoever).
    5) When the game is over, go back to Task Manager, click File>>New Task
    6) Type in explorer.exe and click "OK".
    7) Back to normal

PS: You should never have to pay for a new driver, though keeping them up to date is a good idea. It won't fix this problem, though. :)

i already knew it would fail once i saw "end the explorer.exe" in your post but meh i tried it anyways and it seems it does the same thing as the pallettesuspender, just does not work sorry for your trouble.

Well anyways now im certain its not the graphics.
Now i know this maybe the graphics section but could we try another approach? other than closing the explorer?
if anyone knows such a solution please by all means speak up :)

I read somewhere the best way to fix this is drop your bit colors down some. Like if its at 32 bit, put it to 16. In some cases it makes sense that when all of your equipment is up to date and still not running that maybe you should downgrade it so to speak to make it work the way it was designed.

The xomicron color issue can be fixed on both.

    1. Download directdrawfix at DirectDrawFix - xOmicron Software
    2. Run DirectDrawFix.exe as administrator
    3. Browse the Age of Kings Executable to fix. Most likely it would be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\empires2.exe and press apply
    4. Now browse the conquerors Executable to fix. Most likely it would be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II\age2_x1\age2_x1.exe and press apply

If you do it for both empires2.exe and the conquerors.exe, then the color issue will be fixed on both. It will work on other older games also.
Ok, I got this to work on AOE & Expansion, & AOE II & Expansion. The problem comes when you use a No CD patch for your game. Some No CD patches will work & some will not with this fix. This fix WILL work on an untouched retail EXE of the games.

Unzip directdrawfix at DirectDrawFix - xOmicron Software. Click on the EXE file & then RUN. Do it in Aministrator mode if useing Vista or Windows 7. A window will open up that has a browse button for you to browse to the EXE file of the older game that you wish to patch.

This IS THE LEGIT FIX. It works, period. No more debate or wondering about it.

    IMHO

I can confirm that the fix suggested by isepiq works for AOEX in windows 7. Thanks for passing on the tip!

I realize this 18 month old but for a solution to all the colors and stretching issues and more download the 1.0c patch at Age of Empires Heaven :: Patches and then the most recent patch at UserPatch: Conquerors Feature Update
Install the patches and have fun: the game will first open in a rather tiny window. In Options set whatever resolution you prefer then launch a campaign. The window will resize to the resolution you set in options.
