I searched in whole Internet for a solution and I found one

Go into task manager select the processes tab and end explorer.exe then alt-tab back into age of empires
Note: this will make your task bar disapear and any open folders
To restart explorer open the task manager agian in the aplications tab hit new task and type explorer in the box
The colours change because of the Aero theme's poor handling of colours

    Edit:
You can also make a batch file with the following lines and place it in the same location as your age of empires 2 executable

    taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
    age2_x1.exe
    Start explorer.exe

    Hi guys,

I installed W7 and so far it's been working fine. However, I ran into a problem. When I try to play my AoE 2: the Conquerors expansion, everything works. When I start a game, some of the graphics (trees, grass and water) seem highly corrupted (mostly they're much to 'red'). When I put the resolution on 800x600, it works. When I try 1024x768, I get the weird corruption.
I tried most of the compatibility modes (XP, W2000, W98, all with different combinations of DPI/Visual Themes/256 colors etcetera). Does anybody have an idea?

    Thanks in advance!
I'm not sure if someone has answered your question, but what I do is open the game, then whilst in the game press Alt and Tab, then disable explorer.exe from the task manager, then Alt and Tab again to return into the game, and you should have the correct graphics and colour. I believe the reason for this is the compatibility issues with Aero. Let me know if this works.
I killed from the task manger desktop window manager and win. explorer. this worked for me and many thanks for the help.

my solution for AOE color corruption

    what i do is
    1. open the game (typically at title screen)
    2. press the windows key (bottom lefthand corner of keyboard between the Ctrl and Alt keys)
    3. move cursor so it not on top of an icon
    4. right click
    5. select Screen Resolution (just leave it alone on the desktop)
    6. click on the minimized AOE on the taskbar
    7. play game
    8. when done w/ game, close the Screen Resolution window.

it may seem like a lot of steps, but all is done in 2 seconds. i have tried the kill explorer route and it doesn't always fix the colors for my pc.

    Hi all,
I have written an application "AOE II TC color FIX", which helps you with color issue on AOE 2 The Conquerors. The application can run at the windows backgroung and "watches" in process list, if age2_x1.exe has started. If so, the application AUTOMATICALLY suspends or kills (depends on method you choose) the explorer and relieves it back, when AOC is closed. Test it!

Looking forward for your tests and replies :)

    enjoy

    P.S.: Virus FREE :-D
I can confirm that this works under W7 x64

The BAT file needs to go into the Age of Kings folder not the Conquerors folder.

    Question ?

    Hi

Well i have some kind of problem like colours are too red. But i solve that matter to shut down Windows explorer(task manager) and then play - i read that tip for internet.

Anyway, my real problem is that: i cant play AOE II for 1280x1024 resolution. Earlier i can do that my older CPU(windowsXP), but nowdays i cant with windows 7.

Maybe my question belong to graphic-section i dont know. I can change my resolution my ATI catalyst panel - but in windows7 own control panel there not 1280x1024 resolution. If i click control panel/adjust resolution/advanced settings - i see there are 1280x720 resolution. I have old Nokia crt-monitor, so maybe it cant do anything on that matter. Ofcourse if i play AOE 2 i that panel i cant change resolution.

    Cheers

Cannot Open AOE Gold or AOEII

Everytime i open up AOE it opens up a black screen then
closes and a error bok pops up and says " Could not
initialize Graphics , make sure you video card and driver
are compatible with direct draw" i need to know how i can
fix this problem. I am running an ATI Raedon 4350.

    Hi,
I am having this exact same problem. I know this thread is mainly about fixing color glitches, and for that I congratulate all of you for at least being able to get into the game!

I however cannot, and it is extremely frustrating. I get the same error message as quoted above. I have tried running in compatibility modes, downloading various versions of DirectX, adjusting display settings, ending explorer while game is loading, even disabling my video driver, all to no avail. Does anyone have ANY suggestions? This is depressing; this was my favorite game all-time growing up.
From what I can tell reading this and other threads, there ARE ways to get this game to work in Win7, I just haven't found it yet after 2 weeks of searching.

    System specs are:
    Manufacturer+Model Number: Dell/Studio 540
Video Card: ATI Raedon 4350 HD
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 @2.5GHz, 2499 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Version 6.1 (Buiild 7600)
    System Type: x64-based PC
    RAM: 6 GB

I know the fix ! I had the same issue until I did this
Open notepad and type: taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
    age2_x1.exe
    Start explorer.exe

Name it what ever you want and save it as ALL FILES with a .bat at the end of the name.
After that put the Batch file into the Age of Empires 2 folder and create a shortcut of the BATCH file on your desktop. Then double-click the BATCH file on your desktop when the AOE2 Disk is in the drive.
    Have Fun !

Not sure If anyone said this or not, also I'm pretty sure theres multiple solutions. What you do is start up the game, then on the main menu (or in game, it doesn't matter) minimize the program, you can hit the windows key to do this, I think escape does as well. Now start up task manager and end explorer.exe then hit alt+tab and open aoe back up, and it should look normal. When you exit the game and are back on your blank desktop open the task manager back up, click file, new task, and type in exporer.exe
