    Dwarf,

I'm new to the x64 system and have just installed Win 7 final RTM from Technet and followed the above instructions for x64 and for some reason I get the following error. As you know Win 7 has DX11. Do we have to install lesser versions of DirectX?

    Hi Peter,

This happens because the program is not compatible with the version of DirectX that you have installed. Fortunately, this is quite easy to rectify. All you need to do is to install the Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime If this doesn't work, you may also need to install Download details: DirectX Redist (August 2008)

The 1st link was sufficient to kick it into gear...thanks.

I'm getting a déja vu here....did I ask you this before? If so forgive me, it's my age you know...LOL.

Now for the last hack...getting my sidebar back.

I'm glad you managed to get it working. I can't recall whether or not you asked me before, but it doesn't really matter. This should help those who also get the same message as you originally got. I did point this out here in my post:

    3. Goto the Microsoft Downloads and download and install DirectX (you will need to install the Genuine Advantage Tool). I recommend that you use the 32-bit browser for this.

Thanks. I guess this is a case of something NOT being backwards compatible....the DX I mean.

I did the transfer of files and compatability thing but I get an error when I try to start Tinker as shown in figure 1.

See also figure 2, is this something to do with it?
I also have the same problem.

    Try these sites:
    d3dx9_41.dll free download - DLL-files.com - d3dx9_41.dll

    d3dx9_39.dll free download - DLL-files.com - d3dx9_39.dll

I don't want to make anyone feel stupid, but Tinker is available for download directly from the Games For Windows Live Marketplace. It's completely free and all you'll need is a Games For Windows Live (or XBOX Live) account and you can download Tinker and play it on Windows 7 without any issues:
    Tinker - Xbox.com

Here's proof, in case you don't believe me:
