If you game with an SSD and all of the files on the said game(s) are on the SSD itself, you should see a little bit of a performance boost followed by faster models and load times for maps. What will help you perform in games is a better graphics card. I recommend you upgrade your PC if you're struggling on the games you want to play.

If you're tight on money for new parts, I would start with buying either a case or a motherboard.

I would get a SSD, a better graphics card, switch to a x64 install and add more ram. You will get a great performance boost.

A SSD won't give a huge performance boost, you'll notice a difference in load times if you get one, but I'd honestly suggest upgrading your MoBo and RAM first if you're struggling to run games you want to play. You've got a solid GPU that should run most games pretty well, you could upgrade it and squeeze out a little more. A SSD would help a bit, but it's not a huge boost.

Your RAM is old and you don't have enough of it for newer games. It's enough that games will run, don't get me wrong, but it's not optimal and most likely where your bottleneck is at.

You can't upgrade to DDR3 RAM without a new Mobo. DDR3 and DDR2 RAM use different slots and they aren't compatible. You could go with 4GB+ of DDR2 and that would help, but there's no going to DDR3 without a new motherboard.

Running a 64 bit OS will also provide a small improvement, so since you'll have to reinstall your OS if you do get a new SSD, consider investing in a 64bit OS as well if and when you decide to do it.

Honestly, you probably need a new MoBo first. You'll get an improvement from running a new GPU or upgrading to a SDD, but your DDR2 RAM is going to create a bottleneck and limit how much improvement you can get out of newer parts. If your Mobo is old enough to be running DDR2 you could probably use an upgrade for your PCIE slot as well and I'd suggest a new Mobo that has more than one PCIE slot.

I suggest a case and motherboard upgrade before anything else. You'll see an improvement with upgrading other things, but your current RAM will always be a bottleneck for your performance and limit how effective any other upgrade will be.

If the spikes are caused on the game server side. no hardware upgrade will fix it.
You may try to reduce ping or get a better connection. But if its all on the server of the MMO, it will be up to them to fix it.

A ssd won't boost performance on games. All it will do is make loading times faster. Your gpu,Cpu and ram determine performance. Not saying don't get a ssd but just letting you know since I haven't seen anyone mention this.
