    got it working

Ok there is one sure fire way to 'solve' this issue, I had the same problem with rct2 freezing up on me, my solution was to do as follows... step1: download virtual box, step 2: download an ubuntu iso, step 3: set up ubuntu to run as a virtual machine within windows 7, step 4: download wine from within ubuntu, step 5: install wine, step 6: using wine install rct2 in ubuntu, step 7: play as normal.

This is the only work around that i have found... so far.

    Good luck

I signed up for this forum solely because this is the only place that discusses the problem I'm having. Has anyone figure it out yet? I've tried all the suggestions, including running it on Ubuntu. When I run it on Ubuntu, it has a really bad frame rate, and I have no idea how to fix it. I've tried the majority of compatibility settings to no avail.

I'm trying to play RCT1 Deluxe, if that matters. ANY help would be appreciated

I don't think there is any good fix for this yet. It runs just fine on windows xp. I was lucky enough to get an old laptop recently, so I got to replay it on there. Who knows, maybe it will work on windows 8, heheh.

just tried a virtual machine 'VMware player' with XP SP2 and it works flawlessly. you have to change your actual OS resolution though to make the game fill up the screen.

Heres what works for me if I dont run other programs:

    Compatibility mode WinXP SP2
    265 Colors
    Visual Themes disabled

If u right-click the installation folder, go to properties and then Safety (?, my os is dutch)
Press edit in the middle of the screen and add a user with description 'Everyone' (depending on ur OS language). Check the full acces box.

It still freezes with MSN tho.

If you have Windows 7 Pro or above - it comes with the virtual pc feature. You can use this to install Win XP and then run the game without any issues.

    Just a heads up.

Hate to resurrect a 9 month old thread, but I finally found a solution to this. The issue is caused when using a multicore processor. What you have to do is launch the game, then open task manager. find the process (I want to say rct2.exe) and right click it. Then set affinity to use only one CPU. I did that and have never experienced a crash since. Hope this helps people since it's one of the first Google results.

    I too..need help.

I have the GOG (good old games) version, DRM free. It WAS working all until I installed a new card, NVIDIA GeForce GT 440

Yet I am still on a single core processor. The loading takes its time, then remains black with terrible looping sound, forcing me to hold the power button

RCT1 still performs I wonder why this problem occurred with RCT2
