update: it seems to work for me now regardless of what runs in the background, I suspect that one of the windows updates might have fixed it, or it was really the nvidia chipset/gpu drivers.

have you installed all windows updates? there was one specifically adressing crashes in older applications...
I have the same problem, hax.

Sometimes SC would crash in the first game or after 3 games later. It's so random. When it crashes I see the fuzzy colors in the screen which made game play impossible but the music is still playing in the background. When I do Ctrl+alt+del the game just totally freeze altogether. It's really annoying. The same issue is found in Windows XP Sp3 as well as Windows 7 ultimate 32bit (currently using now). I have updated nvidia Geforce drivers at 191. I tried all the methods with killing explorer, cpu affinity. I even tried it on 3 different 9800GTX cards and the same problem. I suspect it just the nvidia cards.

after updating the nvidia drivers (nforce as well as geforce drivers!) try not doing anything else - except maybe closing skype. so don't set the cpu affinity anymore or anything else, it should work then. if I set cpu affinity now to only one core, it crashes for me too. if I do nothing - except sometimes close skype - it doesn't crash at all.

found this in another forums. solved my problem...
unzip the files into starcraft folders, and run the gaming by using the newly added StartcraftFix.exe
Can anyone confirm if this works?

Edit: Don't use this patch, people. It gave me a bunch of errors.

    Hey all,

I've tried every fix that has been posted and continue to have problems. Is there any other fixes that someone has found? I'm using a retail version of Win 7 Home Premium. Thanks in advance for any tips.
