I know disabling explorer.exe through task manager works as-well. Don't know if anyone's mentioned that here..

Several times and it's also the most primitive way possible. A possibly more convient and elegant way is to use windows own compatibility functions for a permant solution.
Use one of the the direct draw fix tools. They will analyse the program in question and store the compatibility flags in the windows registry compatibility path.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DirectDraw\Compatibility\ (for a x64 OS)

DirectDraw Compatibility Tools

I prefer the russian ddraw patcher since I can op to have the changes wrote to a .reg file instead directly to the registry. That way you can open with a text editor the .reg file and check the values for yourself prior.

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

I found this via a Google Search and while it seems to be a great tool, I am having problems loading it up at all as my computer keeps on deleting the process due to it containing Malware. I tried closing my Firewall down but it still keeps on deleting the process. Any tips ? I need this to fix garbled video playback in Pharaoh.

Which tool/process specifically and you shouldn't turn off your firewall. There is no reason for it. Non of the tools need to or does actually communicate with someone outside.

It's probably a problem with your Virus scanner. I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials.
I find it the least intrusive and I actually can't remember when I had the last time a false positive with it.

If in doubt you can use an online multi virus scanner to be sure.

Here for the scan results for the two tools I posted.

w7ddpatcher.exe aka Win7 DirectDraw fix for 256color games

I personally prefer the first tool, because instead to have the compatibility flags written directly to your registry you can opt to write them to a registry file first. Then you can take a look first before importing it to your registry. Of course if you don't know what these values mean it doesn't matter what tool to use. It just convenience.

Found a Fix! ( Kill Explorer.exe )

Hi all! I know this thread is old, but for anyone else who comes across this thread will find this helpful.

1. Create a batch File in the Starcraft root directory
2. Put this code in it:

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
Start explorer.exe

3. Start 'er up!

All this does is kill Explorer.exe, which seems to cause all the wierd colours. When you exit the game, Explorer.exe will start again

Note: This fix works for all older games of the same era, this can be derived for other games like Age of Empires II

No need for all of this and the possible side effects of killing explorer.exe. Just use one of the tools above to apply the proper compatibility mode for DirectDraw games. Since it write the compabitliy flags directly to the Windows Registery, you need to do this only once!

Or just google for Directdraw Compatibility Tool. There should be several good hits on the front page including the first two results.
Do not tinker around when there is proper way to do it!

Instead of killing explorer.exe you could just suspend it while the game is started.
If you stop the game you could resume it.

the haeggergru has written a small tool for this: sclpf (starcraft lan patch fixes)

Holy Cow! Norton renew
I just received a nice alert from Norton that my Norton Internet Security 2014 software will expire in 23 days. I've always used Norton; can't imagine any other antivirus/security software, but for some reason, this year it pains me to pay the $69.99 renewal charge...and I'd be afraid to run a...
