I'm running Win7 x64 and had the exact same problems as Tenebrarum. Tried everything posted in these forums and still got the "Fallout 3 stopped working... Windows is checking for a solution..." message. Turns out Fallout didn't like my multi-display config. I'm running two ATI HD 3850s out to 4 monitors. I disabled one of my 3850s and ran the other 3850 to one monitor only. After that I ran the fallout launcher again and its works fine. As soon as I enable the 2nd monitor or the 2nd video card it goes back to crashing on startup.

I wish I had an explanation for this but I don't have a clue. Hope this helps.

    vid card problems.

Then it's pretty much confirmed a vid card issue. Not THE CARD, but the game's having troubles finding the right card, and linking it to the correct monitor.

Bummer. Like was already suggested, try just one monitor plugged in, and make sure you reboot after.

Win 7 tried to tackle the multiple monitors, and they did a decent job, but I have had trouble with my 19" crt. I can't run in 1600x1200 and get a picture. After I install new nVidia drivers it sets the crt to the primary monitor, and my 19" lcd to secondary. Which it usually defaults the crt to 1900. So I end up with nothing on the lcd but the background, and a blank crt set as the primary with all the goodies on it. If I turn the crt down to 1280x1024 I get a signal.

The first time it did this I fixed it and got the primary back on the lcd with the crt running 1600. When I updated the drivers, it did it again, and now I can't remember how I got it to straighten the monitors out.

Point: try just changing things in the WINDOWS r-click and screen resolution. Maybe you can sweet talk it into working.

trust me, i tried everything, and when i meant 1 card + 1 monitor, i mean i really removed the other cards physically, and only 1 was plugged on the PC along with 1 monitor, also a normal 22" nothing special.

    hi all,

My pc has the "new" 705x" version of windows 7 along with a beta key I got back in December.
When I run Fallout, upon exit, the game freezes and all i get is a black screen. (mind you the game itself plays perfectly). There is no way I can exit it, even via the task manager. And the most concerning thing is that my pc refuses to shut down or restart (probably due to the fact that the game is still running in the background)
I have the 182 nvidia drivers, and I think I have updated the directx drivers (although the fallout3 setup also run the directx installer)

As I recall, the game would also crash on vista, but I could kill the process from the task manager.

any ideas? Should I try a cracked laucher or something?

I'm playing with cracked launcher and it runs fine and quits fine and I have no problem shutting down.

Will try that, thanks. It is really frustrating, as other games play and exit fine.
Will report back later, after I return home.

EDIT: No dice. still freezes upon exit. I can access the taskbar via alt-ctl-esc, buit upon reboot, the pc just never restarts.

EDIT2: I deleted the two ini files in the games folder. When I tried to edit them after the game had recreate them, Windows explorer froze. It seemed like I did not have the permissions to do so, despite the fact that the security tab days otherwise.
