    The whole game felt like Oblivion. I wonder why?

    The patch supposedly fixed the CTD after exit.

    My problem is different to all you guys. If I run the Fallout 3 launcher and just select play, everything works OK.
    However, if I try to change any settings - either in launcher or in-game - it freezes up and I have to reboot or close it down with task manager.
    Any ideas on that one?
    PS. I've looked at all the permissions thing.

    Probably not the greatest, and way too long

    This is what I can add to the "infinite first-run" loop.

    Ok, after putting a brand new comp together, new os installed, and spending all night messing with Fallout 3, I have solved my woes. As elegant as this may NOT be, here's my answer to get around the loop.

    The problem for me was that the launcher was ID'ing the video card wrong in the preferences. To tell you the truth, I have not an idea as to how to get the launcher to stop it's "first run" loop. I can play the game with no problems though. I think it may be a registry entry that can be changed, and I'll get back if I can fix it.

    I opened the dxdiag in the system32 folder {c:\Windows\System32\Dxdiag.exe}

    Click "Save all information" and click save. This will put the info in a text file on the desktop.

    Open that text file, and find "Card Name" under "Display Devices" Mine was: {ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (Engineering Sample – WDDM v1.1)}

    Copy the card name. (See my example^^)

    Navigate to the "FalloutPrefs.ini" file {C:\Users\<{YOUR USER}>\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\FalloutPrefs.ini}

    Right-click and "Edit"

    I noticed that the {sD3DDevice="ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (Engineering Sample ? WDDM v1.1)"} didn't match the Dxdiag screen.

    So, Paste the name from the text file into the falloutprefs.ini accordingly. Yes, copy and paste from the text file. The dash in the card name is not a normal minus sign.

    Save and close the ini file.

    BEFORE you can go play, you MUST start the game once, and set your video options. Get your vid options set all the way you want them. I know that if you need to change something later it will be a pain. Try to be conservative with the graphics so you don't have to re-set the options. (I haven't tried this part yet, so I don't know if the launcher will actually save to the ini file or not yet. IF the launcher will save the prefs. then this is how it will HAVE to be done. Other wise, we will be stuck manually editing the ini. Which shouldn't be THAT hard. It's pretty much plain English.)

    DO THE NEXT STEPS EXACTLY.

    So, Start the launcher, and get your prefs. set.

    WHEN YOU CLICK PLAY THE GAME SHOULD START BUT.....

    DO NOT QUIT THE GAME, LEAVE IT RUNNING.
    We need to tab out so we can go write protect the ini file from the launcher.

    Hopefully, you left the folder with the ini file open, but if you didn't, nav to {C:\Users\<{YOUR USER}>\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\}

    Right-Click the {FalloutPrefs.ini} and click properties.

    Click the security tab at the top.

    Click "Edit"

    Click your username.

    Click the {deny} checkbox next to "Write"

    Click "yes" on a popup asking about the change, click ok on the properties.

    The only thing left is to make sure Fallout is running as your user, and not the admin.

    Nav to the FalloutLauncher.exe I did a custom install to {c:\Users\Public\Games\Fallout3\}<-public folder The default is {C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\} <--secure folder
    Shouldn't matter.

    Right-Click "FalloutLauncher.exe", and click properties.

    Click on the compatibility tab at the top, and make sure "run as administrator" is UNCHECKED.
    As far as I know you don't have to set the compatibility mode.

    Do the same thing for fallout3.exe. (R-click, properties, compatibility, UNCHECK admin.)

    NOW, you should be able to tab back to the game, quit, and restart it.

    It WILL tell you it's going to automatically set the prefs. again everytime you start the game, but the launcher will not be able to write to the .ini file. Nothing will change, and the game will now start with whatever you set in the .ini file manually. If you want to manually change the .ini file, you will have to remember to give your user write permissions again to be able to save the file, and remember to write protect it again when you are done.

    Hey, you can play the game now right?

    The short story to how to get the launcher to save prefs again...

    Go back to the ini file, restore write permissions, restart the game, set your prefs, "play" the game, tab out, deny write permissions again, u're done.
    (honestly, with the way I've set it up, you should be able to just R-click the FalloutLauncher.exe and run as admin to re-gain write permissions on a "that-run" basis. IF YOU DO IT THIS WAY, YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE THE VIDEO CARD NAME IN THE INI FILE AGAIN LIKE ABOVE. Any time the launcher is used to re-write the .ini file it's going to change your card name back to the ? version instead of the - version.)

    Have fun, and good luck.

    Windows 7 + Steam + DLC

    I couldn't find anything related directly to my problem, but i didn't want to make a brand new post, so I figured i'd do it in here.

    I'm using Windows 7, Steam, Fallout and the DLC Anchorage.

    The game works perfectly without the DLC. Last night I decided to grab it on Windows Live. Put it into place, loaded it up, everything was good.

    I started to play it, and it saved the game, that was fine.

    Then I died, and it tried to load my saved game, and it crashed back to the desktop. I tried restarting the game and loading that saved game, and it crashes immediately after i choose the saved game.

    I CAN load games that were saved before I installed the DLC.

    Is anyone else having this exact issue?

    Installing DLC

    It seems that my run with the expansion didn't even give an option to load a saved game. I did have two games started.

    I really am not any debugger or anything, but I don't think your really having a problem. There are many games out there that will cause saves to not work after an expansion. A lot of them make you start over. They can be just not compatible sometimes.

    I do find it odd that you can try to load your old game though. With what I'm saying, I think the game client is crashing because it doesn't understand the save file.

    I'd just bite it and start over. Believe me, I understand what I'm asking you to do. This game seems quite buggy.

    Fallout 3 doesn't run on Windows 7 x64?

    Hi, i'm having a problem running fallout 3 under windows 7 (build 7000) x64...

    First of all, to install it, i had to run the direct setup.exe as the launcher crashed right away, now after installation, being through the launcher, or just the fallout3.exe it crashes ... tried everything from drivvers, to compatibility modes, to administrator rights, etc... really, tried everything i can think of, and it still crashes as soon as i run the files, i just get that typical error like... "Fallout 3 launcher stopped working... Windows is checking for a solution... etc..."

    I also tried reinstalling, and nothing seems to work...

    I am using the original Fallout 3 DVD and it seems to keep crashing in every possible way... would really appreciate if anyone could give me a hint..

    Thanks!

    Installer issues?

    Have you had any other programs crash the windows installer?
    Have you tried the registry fix issued by Microsoft to fix the windows installer?

    The fix is listed here:
    Adobe Reader Installation - Fix - Windows 7 Forums

    I could not install a ton of MSI based installers (like ANY Adobe) and a few other things before I deleted that registry key in the link above.

    If you haven't gotten rid of that reg. key, do it now, and try to re-install the game.

    The key to delete(just delete the folder in the left-hand panel in regedit if you go that route.):
    {HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions\}

    You will need admin permissions, and I HIGHLY suggest saving a backup of your registry before you EVER change anything. {File>Export}

    That's about the only thing I can think of right off the top of my head. Fallout3 DOES install and work fine on Windows7. Even with the expansion installed, I only still have problems with the launcher in 'first-run' mode, and the saved games from pre-expansion seem to not be compatible with the post-expansion version of the game. My launcher loop solution is posted above, and the saves... well they are prolly just not compatible, and they prolly never will be. Game makers seem to like to do that to us.

    Good luck! I hope this fixes you!
    -Dan

    EDIT:
    Oooohh... When it crashes, you should wait for the "fallout3 has stopped working, checking for solutions" to get done, and submit the error report. When I was having trouble installing Adobe, this is exactly how I learned about the reg. fix. Microsoft should get back to you with a solution within a couple days. ...if they have one I suppose. It's their OS, you should give 'em a shot at it. You are running on a beta key, so have no fear of sending them info. They want your feedback, no matter how you obtained the OS. Not saying you hacked anything, but if you did... IT's all good! They want your feedback! You'll help 'em make more monies! Plus it might help you out. MS has been quite 'on-the-ball' with Win7 in my experience.

    Well... guess what... it didn't work, hate these 64bit systems... lol compatibility issues with every program there is... really pisses me off, just 2 weeks ago or so installed and put FO3 working on a friend's PC with W7 32bit...

    thanks anyway man, if any1 knows anything, or thinks of anything that might solve it, i'm open to suggestions

    PS: i had already tried editing the registry before, but it did nothing really...
    PS2: didn't know that also fixed the explorer crashes... but even after doing it, it keeps shooting around once and a while so... guess i'll just have to pray for this to hold until W7 officially comes out :)

    x64

    I have not installed x64. I didn't get a download and key of it when it was up. *slaps self* So, take this kinda lightly.

    It sounds to me like the game cant gain control over the vid card for the game window. Like, it trys to start the game, you never really see anything rendered, the game just crashes right there. Which would be compatibility with the drivers and windows.

    The only thing I have left is, run the Dxdiag, save the info, and verify that everything is named exactly the same in the falloutprefs.ini and fallout3.ini. Make sure everything you can find about your vid card or usages by windows is all linked right, and working properly. Try to run the game with your vid cards control panels options set to let the application decide everything, or maybe try it with the vid card making all the decisions.
    Maybe turn some bios OCs down if you have some things cranked up.

    You can try turning off the PhysX on an nVidia and see if that helps. Try setting the falloutprefs.ini graphics settings quite a lot lower, and see if it'll run in crap mode and start bringing the graphics back up after.

    Just shooting blanks at this point, but you never know. I've come across some programs that all it took was installing it about 500 times to get it to work. Always go through all the little things, like making sure the vid card is seated right still, all your fans are clean, etc.
