I wish it worked for me! I still have the same old 'freeze on exit' problem. Very frustrating.
Somehow, I found out that the problem was linked to strange folder permissions (the fallout3 folder in the user->games directory). All the .ini files where un-deletable etc.
    That's why a re-installation resolved my issues.

    @muppchan

I installed Fallout3 without problems multiple times. Which OS version are you running?

Again, none of that permission stuff was a problem for me, so that didn't help the 'freezing on exit' issue either, unfortunately.

I had the freezing on exit thing, but only if I exited the whole game from actually game play.

I found that if I exited from gameplay to the main menu first, then from the main menu, exit the whole game, that worked fine. Does it freeze for you even if you exit from main menu?

No need to go to XP compatibility, it works perfectly on Vista.
I'm sure everyone has already tried the compatibility thing as that is the first thing I try if software doesn't work.
Out of all the games and apps I have, Fallout3 is the only one that gives me any problem at all on Win7.

i had fallout 3 installed on Windows 7, but it acted really wierd. I would get the to the part where you picked your Gender and Name, but there would be very long pauses after they would say anything. They would just sit there and look for like a minute lol. I tried reinstalling but to no avail. So i had to go back to Vista to play it I tried all the compatibility modes and everything. I was using a 4870

I have Fallout 3 installed on build 7000 and have it running fine (better than vista actually).

I recently downloaded The Pitt and have had no luck with that. I see in the opening menu that "the Pitt" has been added to my downloaded content, but is not in the data section. When I play the game in Win7 it enever gives me a radio message. I took my save game back over to Vista and got the radio message within a minute.

It has to be a misplaced install file. I'm going to take a look at it and see if I cant get it running in 7 and I'll check back.

I'm using the latest beta Nvidia drivers on a fresh install of build 7057.
Interestingly, The game appeared to work fine until I went outdoors. While still indoors I put the game through it's paces: cleaned out the band of raiders holed up inside the northern-most ComSat array. Usual indoor fun with VATS and the shotgun. Within a few seconds of going outside, the game crashes.

One peculiar thing I note is that the crash causes no perceptible slowdown in the system. Maybe 7 is better at cleaning up after killed processes than its predecessor. Any game crash in Vista would cause a massive slowdown for nearly a minute and 7 behaves as if I had just closed Calculator. On 2 GB of memory.

... Nvidia is the culprit. I know we're only in Beta, not primetime, but then again it took over a year for Nvidia to not occasionally bluescreen me from the desktop, let alone from inside an intense video game. I know ATI had a few problems, but their crashes seem to be fixed already.

I'd like to know if anyone else on Nvidia hardware has similar problems. I'll keep trying a few things, such as different video settings.

On a side note about Windows Update forcing the beta drivers:
Microsoft has been irritated with driver developers due to the perceived instability of Vista they largely caused. In a way, it makes it easier for them to say "Well, we did our best. We've provided you with the latest drivers they have. Blame them." I don't blame them for not wanting to put a third of the perceived stability of their flagship product solely in the hands of Nvidia, and Nvidia doesn't want people to stop buying their products because it doesn't work on the OS that came with their OEM computer. So they're holding hands on this one, instead of deferring to one another. Hopefully.

Yes I am having the same issue. Regardless of gfx settings the game hangs after 30secs-2mins of roaming around.
