Can't search or detect LAN server in most of games

I have Inspiron 1420, and i just wanted to join a LAN server that created using vista, but fail. I tried using ad-hoc and router but still can't detect. The games I tried before is Counter Strike Zero, Counter Strike Source, and Quake 4. The hosts of games I tried to connect is different laptop but same vista os. And they can't detect my server as well when I host a games server. Please give me some solution.
Thanks.
