Yes i know what Valve say themselves about not running any Steam apps via compatibility mode sygnus21 but i for one take everything they say with a pinch of salt. After all looking through the Steam forums kind of backs this up.
But after that said i have had better results and not just on my PC but lots of friends by using this method. I fully understand it's not for everyone as is the case with many fixes due to so much hardware/software differences. I was just trying to give out a bit more help and i suppose there is no harm in trying, eh! :) It personally works out better for me and stops HL2.exe crashing at random times.
Anyway damnage1 if you're not to confident within your bios read your laptop manual or find it online to get a bit better knowledge. As long as you don't actually go changing anything before reading up on it you'll be fine. The bios is not that much of a scary place. It's actually very simple. Once you can get in of course. Usually it's a matter of tapping the Delete key or one of the Function keys on startup until the bios screen is displayed. Keep at it and you'll get there Once you are in there look for something like "Dedicated video memory" or something like that. If you have 2Gb of system memory the recommended amout to use is 256Mb.
