    The Evil Within

I bought this over the weekend as I'd been looking forward to it for quite a while, finally go it installed today (in between messing up and repairing my Windows installation three times) and played through the opening chapter. Graphically it's very impressive and the gameplay seems smooth enough for the limited time I've had on it so far. Gore is abundance from the off and I don't think I've ever seen a game with so much blood, guts and horror.
There's also the best cut scene I've ever seen after the first chapter, I normally get bored with them pretty quickly but this one is absolutely brilliant. I'm looking forward to the rest of the game now.

I'll get some more screenshots as I go through but here's a little taster for the great graphics and atmosphere.

Looks pretty complicated from the videos but i think i'll give it a run this might be the new Silent Hill people were talking about or something close to it

What about the controls? I've seen videos of gameplay and it feels like it has very clunky controls and stiff movements

Man I've really got to rack my brain to remember Silent Hill, it's been a long, long time since I played that. But going off my (really bad, probably unreliable) memory then yeah, it's probably as close as you can get. It's certainly got the atmosphere and I reckon if you did enjoy SH then you'll love this.

It's slightly clunky to be fair but it's something you get used to pretty quickly. My main gripes are the over-the-shoulder viewpoint which makes things difficult to focus on sometimes and get you losing your bearings pretty quickly, and the camera panning can be quite erratic. One thing I've noticed on videos is that the aiming looks bad and jerky, it's not really though. The aiming is Tomb Raider style but you only have a few bullets, and with the unpredictable movements of the 'things' (Zombies? Demons?) you end up panicking and just shooting anywhere.

I think there are some console commands available though that can free up the camera, I'll have to see if I can find them again.

Well after another couple of hours I'd say this tops Silent Hill by a country mile. The gameplay is very slow, you need to use stealth and really be aware of your surroundings as the zombie things can appear anywhere, and coupled with the 'widescreen' aspect of the display and the camera view you rarely see them before it's too late. It seems like it's going to be way too hard at first when you run out of pistol ammo pretty quickly and the torches you scrounge break after one hit you're pretty much left with your fists. But as you venture into part three the weapons inventory starts to expand at a satisfying rate.

My main gripes are mainly shallow I suppose but I'll list them anyway. Firstly it's pretty irritating when you hit an enemy square in the face with a shotgun and it doesn't kill them (where it does with others), it just takes half of their head off and leaves them coming for you.

Secondly, checkpoints seem few and far between in comparison with what you've done in that chapter. I had a quick succession of checkpoints before taking nearly an hour clearing an area, but when the end of area surprise ripped me to pieces in seconds I was put back a fair way with lots of progress lost which made me quit the game or a while. I didn't have time to redo everything I'd just done, I'll leave it until tonight.

With all that said though I'll give a few tips.

    • Explore everywhere. Leave no cupboard unopened and smash every single container.
    • Burn any inanimate bodies. Don't get caught by surprise.
    • Don't be tempted to run, it doesn't pay off.
    • Scan the area before moving, then scan it again.
    • Make your shots count.
    • Use the hiding places, they seem worthless at first but they're not.
    • Watch out intently for traps, and be sure to disarm them and take the parts. You'll need them.

Still, a gorgeous game and it's enjoyable taking in the scenery as you plan your way through it. I'm loving it apart from the progress loss.

Just played through from where I got pushed back to earlier and completed it all quicker and quieter, saving all of my best ammo for the boss at the end. After hitting him with everything I had and getting blown to bits in one go I decided to turn it off. I'm quickly going off this game, I know bosses are supposed to be hard but my ammo was full and I emptied the lot into him for him not to die. That's stupid.
