about the extra 20 bucks for upgrades I think thats the reason IW did IWNET so they can cash in on pc gamers...get it?? STEAM only and IWNET makes sense perfect sense .i luv steam but this is clearly to cash in on the maps and upgrades

Well I got it as a Christmas present and don't really get into the online gaming. But have really enjoyed it so far, haven't finished it yet but like the new maps and such also the weapons get to use the drone to drop ordinance. Get to fight in side the White House and down streets pretty cool. But then I'm not a hard core gamer but with a GTX260 Superclocked the graphics are awesome to me anyways.

I don't want bag on a man's method of gaming, but... c'mon... "light years ahead?" Really?

One can argue that consoles are easier to set up and they may get the user playing quicker (don't know, never installed a game on a console), but then wouldn't you be implying that installing and running a game on a PC is somehow "difficult"? While it's true that operating a pc requires a certain level of sophistication, the bar isn't set very high. As far as dedicated servers go, PC's have been using them for more than a decade, so I think things are backwards here: pc gaming is light years ahead of consoles.

I got a chance to run through the game over the holidays; by attempting to turn the PC into a glorified console they ruined the CoD experience. Yeah sure, the sp is graphically sweet, but there's no depth to the game, which is exceedingly short, and online play is just trash. Honestly, I don't know how console users put up with it?

P2P networks are just not designed for time sensitive data. Perhaps P2P's may "work" with a game where all you do is walk around and lather magical potions on your opponent, but they certainly don't work for fps games. Consoles deal with this major design flaw by coding auto aim into the game, but why bother playing if you're really not anyway, right? Since PC's have no hard coded auto aim, we suffer on home connections... as opposed to the enterprise class connections we're accustomed to.

I could have sworn I mentioned it before, but I'll say it again. PS3 games don't just "auto aim" for you. There is aim assist, which can be toggled on/off, but if "auto aim" was part of CODMF2 I wonder why I just don't mow down everyone within my sights and vice versa? LOL!

There really is no "set-up" for games on PS3, other than inserting the Blu Ray disk or running a game that's been downloaded. You don't have to tweak anything. Just be sure you have a good internet connection for on line play, which applies to any platform.

True, there is an aim assist feature in console games; that feature is also a part of many PC games, but that's different than the the auto aim consoles use to compensate for the disparity in ping they suffer... a disparity that exists because they often run games on P2P networks.

PC's don't have this "feature" because they don't need it; you can usually find a dedicated box which provides a nice low ping... a box that doesn't rely on Big Tony's home connection.

I've often heard PS3 guys say that their games run great on Sony's servers... yeah... well, how do you think they're able to do that?

Play Stations are not immune to the pitfalls of gaming on P2P networks just because they're Play Stations, besides, not all PS games run off Sony's servers: only Sony games are run on Sony's servers. Third party games, like Modern Warfare 2, use P2P networks. If auto aim wasn't hard coded into the game, you could not play... you'd never hit a thing when your ping jumped to 800ms, which, unfortunately, is not uncommon for gamers who must rely on P2P networks.

If you also have the PC version of the game you can view how bad P2P networks are for yourself. By default, each green bar you see represents 100ms, which, as any gamer who plays on dedicated servers knows, isn't exactly optimal.

Quote:
Navigate to the folder: 'program files\steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players' and open the file config_mp.cfg

Change scoresping_interval from 100 to 20, and maxbars from 4 to 10 (10 is the max).

This means that each of the 10 bars represents 20ms, with full green being 20ms or lower, and 1 red being 200ms or higher.

... or, another way would be to fire up a PC game and find a server with the highest ping you can, and try playing... that's what consoles would be like if they didn't have auto aim as no piece of nifty code, no optimization can negate the reality of distance between client and host.

As far as why you don't mow down everyone, well... consoles sort of do... I've found that you really only have to point in the general direction of someone to earn a kill.

... and never mind about how imprecise a controller is vs a keyboard and mouse... if consoles had to deal with that thousands of guys would be stabbing their eyes out with forks.

Long distance kills in MF2 is too easy, IMO. You don't need a 'scoped rifle even. But closer up, with both parties shooting at each other at close range, if you don't get in a head shot first and the other guy does, you are a goner. It also depends heavily on which weapon one is using when trading shots. I've found the subs, using the rapid fire per, do an awesome job most of the time within about a 30' range, as long as I can avoid their tendency to "climb". I'm still trying to figure out which loadout I like the best--each one has it's pitfalls. A 3 round burst with the M16 kinda sucks, but it's got some great knock-down power. SCARH is one of my favs, loaded with a grenade launcher. Secondary weapon of choice for me is the P2000.

all you need is a monitor to use a gaming console. it need not even have a tv tuner. see Costco for a variety of models under $300.
