Steam is a different type of DRM. It tries to verify every time the game is run that its legal or unmodified.
I myself have to say it has gotten "A LOT" better then when it was first launched, and makes things a little easier for people like me that travel and like to play a game or two on my down time.
Hearing that it took about a week that mods and other hacks appearing for MW2, it doesn't seem like that Steam is trying too hard preventing game modifications. On the other hand it doesn't stop Steam to create problems for legitimate end users who had purchased the game in question...
its not steams job to fix the game. its not their game, they are not allowed to do much

    1) Out of all my friends who own MW2, none of them have had anything but good things to say about the multiplayer.

    2) Steam is amazing. I've been using it for over three years, and frankly, I have no interest in buying games that do NOT run through steam. I don't have any more cases and CDs piling up, I can lose manuals, etc...and no matter what, I always have my games available. After every install of Windows, it's a piece of cake to get my games reinstalled. In all my time playing games on steam, I have encountered cheaters less than 5 times...at which point it was easy to report the cheater and simply move on to another server.

I take it your sound, video and monitor drivers are up to date?

Please don't say yes for the sake of saying yes. If they are, post the version of the drivers... just to make me feel better
    You were right Astala...

It was the video driver for my X1950XTX card. I didn't realize that the latest ATI drivers are not supported for this video card. Once the latest driver was removed, registry leftovers cleaned out, and the legacy ATI drivers installed, the strange characters turned in to regular fonts.

The way it came about is that IW did respond to ticket that was opened for this issue yesterday and the tech suggested that the issue is the video card driver. I almost responded to him that he's full of it, but decided to follow the links he sent. Low and behold, it's all good. It would've been better listening to you caople of days ego, but it's all good now; thanks...
Well, I am just glad you were able to get it going. You'd be surprise the amount of heartaches and headaches a corrupt, obsolete or wrong driver can cause... it can wreck some serious havoc.

Now, This is some funny stuff, I mean, I have seen a few MP hacks but this one definately takes the cake...

You would think so, at least until you look at their web site, quote from this link:

    Anti-cheat

With true cheat detection, keep cheaters from ruining it for the rest of us. Extend the life and sales of your game by making sure that the game plays as you intended it to when you shipped.
And in case you still wonder, here's another quote from this link:

Steamworks' anti-piracy suite combines three approaches to anti-piracy: (1) Custom Executable Generation, (2) Retail Encryption, and (3) Valuable Platform-Dependant Features. These work together to provide a seamless end-user experience, protecting your game and giving real value to customers.
It seems to me that it is exactly what Steam advertises to do, "making sure that the game plays as intended to when it's shipped". You may think that they've been doing an excellent job preventing cheats, mods, and privacy; I just happen to disagree with that they do...

The game is completely unplayable because it is set up like xbox live.

I have personally witnessed people calling in the AC 130 regardless of how few kills they had. Someone called in an AC 130 5 seconds after the match began with 0 kills once and just stayed in the air shooting the entire time.
He could have picked up someones care package.. I would like a recording of that...

And if all of that within the first week of release does not deter you from wanting to spend the cash then host migration or should I say the lack there of should. 9 times out of 10 if the host leaves host migration does not function as intended and you end up dropping from the match. Or the game will randomly just dump you or crash with an error.
Trust me, I play this game... Host Migration works well, not perfect but well. I have yet to be dropped from a game during this time.
Do you have sources on those numbers? Have you even played MW2 when I host migrates

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare works on Windows 7 so this should as well.

The more important question is whether you want to spend $60 on basically a single-player game as there will be no dedicated servers for multiplayer.

    Ding, Ding, Winner!

Activision and Infinity Ward are screwing PC users with this title - basically selling us a glorified console game with mouse support...and charging us more than we have ever paid before.

No dedicated servers not only means higher latency for folks who aren't the host, it also means:

    1) No more community for thousands of clans. My Clan has had our own servers for nearly a decade and that is where we play. We have over 150 members (in half a dozen countries) and hundreds of regulars. We all know where we can go to play together - on our own servers...but not with MW2. There are no server lists...and certainly no support for you hosting a dedicated 24x7 server.

    2) No more control over cheaters. We can no longer admin/rcon with MW2. Have an obvious cheater that the anti-cheat system doesn't detect? (which is pretty much always the case) Tough. Someone under the map or exploiting a glitch? Too bad. Someone bought cheats/hacks from one of the many groups that sells cheats undetectable by server monitoring software? So what...we have your 60 bucks...and if you don't like a game full of cheaters, move on and give us 60 more bucks for our next title.

    3) No more control over idiots. Have standards where you don't allow profanity, abuse, or harassment on your servers? Tough. In my Clan, we ask such folks to behave, but we also have the right to remove them if they will not. Welcome to the new world...which is a day care center full of 12 year-olds shouting profanity, team shooting, team bashing, intentionally blocking doors, etc. In fact, the IW.Net algorithm will most likely continue to put you in game with them if they live near you.

    4) No more mods and no more custom maps...unless IW provides them. Mods and custom maps are the lifeblood of games with staying power. It's why my clan still has active COD2 servers...and why they are full. Forget it here. They don't want longevity...just a quick hit of sales...and then push you to the next title.

    5) No more console config for non-cheat params. Have an oddly shaped monitor and want to adjust FOV? Guess what? IW says p** up a rope.

    6) Like to lean? Forget it. Let's go lowest common denominator and remove a capability that has been in pretty much every FPS for a decade...including all CoD titles.

    7) Like fluid gameplay? Well sure...oh, unless the "host" player has a blip on their ISP...and then we are all screwed...just as we are when they disconnect and IW.Net has to stop the game, determine who should host next, and then move the server to that player. Having fun in that firefight? No worries...play will resume in five or ten seconds. Please just hang in the middle of your mid-air jump until then. Also, let's see how ISPs like this one. Many have prohibitions against hosting game servers on your account. I never have before, because we outsource our hosting to gameservers.com. Not any more. Sorry verizon.

We need to take a stand. Others are watching. Even John Carmack, father of Quake/Id, is saying that he is waiting to see what happens...and may do the same with Rage.

Vote with your wallets. Bad Company 2 is coming soon...and it WILL support dedicated servers. Play COD4 and WaW a little longer (as well as the new BF2 mod) and wait for BC2.

    $0.02
you obviously aint played the game..............I can tell you now its fantastic and IW Net is nothing like it was feared to be

and as for bad company 2 , they are just using this as a marketing opportunity to lead us to beleive they are supporting PC players , they love us so much we must have just slipped their minds when they brought out the original bad company......i hope to god its better than the bug fest that was BF2 when it first came out , and continues to be till this day

dont be fooled by clever marketing their all just out to take our cash , they could'nt care less abour PC players anymore , too many pirate's out there. and i can bet you now BC2 will be another console port.........with dedicated server files to make us think they "care"

Does anyone know why they bundle crap now with pc games? Steam, drm, installers that break if one small thing is out of line?
Steam is IMO one of the most reliable programs, If it goes down its back up in seconds. I have yet to see it down longer than 20 mins..

I have been using steam for ~4 years. Also, Steam is NOTHING like DRM.
You must not have been playing a couple days ago when steam went down for hours and the IW forums were being overloaded with pissed off PC users.

I agree that the game itself is really good. Probably the best COD release to date in terms of gameplay, perks, and lack of bugs. IWnet is a major failure. I loved the comments that IW's management including fourzerotwo who says that hackers will be non-existant with the use of VAC. Fail. I think I was on for 2 minutes when I experienced my first hacker encounter. VAC is more hackable then punkbuster. At least with punkbuster there was functionality with it. VAC is useless. I too have experienced the party problems and have had many host drop offs and pauses to resolve a new one. Looks like they concentrated on the game but failed in getting the integration of IWnet/Steam working. Bring on the dedi servers, please.

As far as what this forum is really for: Windows 7 runs this flawlessly. I have had no problems at all. If you have WaW you will experience about a 10 FPS increase with MW2. It runs about the same as COD 4. You can't ALT-Tab while in a match but you can while waiting for a match. There's also various AV softwares that call false-positives on various steam .tmp files. I run Avira and it calls them regularly. Hopefully they will come out with a fix for that.
