Which monitor is best for gaming?

    Hey all!

I'm really new to this gaming stuff, and currently, I'll only be playing the Sims 3-4 series; however, that doesn't mean I might decide to play something more demanding in the future (I've updated my system specs). Furthermore, utilizing the muscle of my current rig, I want to make sure I choose the right monitor. Currently, I have a pre-2009 23' LG 60Hz. I wanted to make sure that this one alone is okay for my needs and that there won't be any kind of bottleneck.

---- With my older rig, I believe there was a bottleneck with the graphics card I added paired up with the Core 2 Quad I had, etc.---- I'm hoping not to run into this issue given that this newer pc is more equipped.

I'm debating whether I should keep this older monitor and just pair it up with a newer one for a dual screen setup, sell the old monitor and buy two new monitors.... or just keep and setup all 3.

Moreover, I noticed that the GTX 960 has one HDMI, a DP, and 2 DVI ports. Do I really have to utilize these different connections on the monitors to achieve the dual setup? Or would I daisy chain? It just seems kind of silly to have one monitor connected via HDMI, one by DVI, and another by DP... unless that's they way it's supposed to be?

    ---

I'm looking for a monitor that has a glossy screen --- I hate matte displays.... and it has to be at least 23 inches.... nothing extremely expensive... I don't plan on gaming in nothing above 1080p.

---- edit--- what I'm trying to avoid is ridiculous screen tearing, and I'm always wondering if a 144Hz monitor would benefit me.

    Thank you all!

All your troubles float away with a wonderful technology called...... Vsync, there is no bottleneck on monitors, just refresh rates and resolution (not forgetting response time), ideally you should be aiming for 1080p 24" 60Hz with a response time of 2-5ms, anything else is overkill, and yes I understand that some people can see refresh rates above 60Hz (120-144) but not everyone can, and you're better playing it safe than sorry.

When mine went bad .. Oh a year ago or so, I picked up a HP 25BW at Best Buy fro around $300.

    25" with 60hz IPS panel.

I have to say I have been pretty happy with. Good colors in everything from gaming, to text to photos. It does have a Matte screen though.

It may not be as good as some of the higher end IPS screens, but much better color accuracy than the typical LCD.
For the price, its a very good little monitor.
Ive not noticed any ghosting or anything and game alot.

I used to really like glossy screens too. But after switching to Matte, It took a day or 2 to get used to but now I find I prefer it overall. Each has advantages and disadvantages. But for me, the pros of matte outweigh the cons. But thats just me.

But as mentioned just use Vsync to solve the screen tearing problem and all will be smooth.
The tearing happens when the GPU is drawing more frames than the monitor can display. Basically, whatever the refresh rate is, thats your top FPS it can display. So a 60HZ monitor can only show 60FPS before tearing occurs.
Essentially, your throwing away any drawn frames over the refresh rate. And working your hardware much harder than it needs to, since all that extra work is literally wasted and thrown away.

I agree, most will not tell very much difference between 60 and higher refresh rates though some may.

Erm, I don't think so. It looks pretty matte when it's turned off, it just looks normal to me when it's turned on, no glare to it at all. I'm not a monitor connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination but this is the best one I've owned by far.
