Computer hangs on various game start ups.

Basically, what happens is, if a game runs in fullscreen, there's a slight chance my computer stops responding entirely. The HDD Indicator flickers, and buzzing can be heard- as if it is trying to play the game. However, I am met with a black screen and no sound. I can not Ctrl-Alt-Del or Ctrl-Shift-Esc; it does nothing.

It is also very erratic, it seems to be quite selective of what games do, and what games don't run, for instance, Half Life 2 and it's episodic expansions, as well as L4D2 and 1- Portal, and Portal 2 run fine. Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the same. UT2004 Runs swell. UT3 however, hangs. Metro 2033, Hangs. Skyrim works beautifully. Oblivion Hangs.

I'd like to think it is a resolution issue, as I am using a 17" TV with HDMI. The resolution is at 1280 x 720, and my Graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 550Ti. My Operating System is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Any other information requried? Don't hesitate to ask!

    Hello Armonius.

Firstly, make sure windows, the graphics card, the motherboard, and all the games are fully updated. Next, set the resolution to your prefered setting from within the Nvidia control panel. I can show you where all the drivers are located, but I don't know what motherboard you have. To find out, you can click on the tool download in my signature.

For all drivers, uninstall the older driver from your control panel before installing the new one. A GPU software update can fix a lot of things at times:
    Be careful what you download

Let me know how all this goes.

Well, I always keep my games and hardware up to date with regards to drivers and patches, so that wouldn't be the issue. However- After fiddling with the resolution in the Nvidia Control panel, I was able to get some of the games working. Some, usually older games still have trouble- This only happens when running them in full-screen, again, I am thinking it is due to a lack of support for the resolution my TV Provides. Seems like I'll just have to get a real monitor.

    Arm,

Win 7 may not be compatable with some older games, as well as your graphics card. The graphics card has a list of games that work and don't work well with it. I'm not sure if a monitor will solve your problems, and I don't think it will. Running XP is your best bet for older games. And lowering the graphics settings even more in the Nvidia control panel may benefit you in regards to the older games.

Glad you got at least a few games working better.
