Hi Hugh. Exactly the thought I had. So I went back a few days.
That got me a working demo but it wouldn't uninstall through the control panel so I used Revo again.
That got rid of it but I did another scan at Revos highest setting and found an extra registry item that the regular scan wasn't getting.
So I got rid of that and tried again. This time I was prompted that I needed Windows Live for games.
This comes with MSN etc. and I declined what I was allowed to but still got a bunch of crapware I don't want and an incredibly long download and install time.
Then I installed Batman which took a while and then I tried to play it.
I have to log in to Windows Live and then it went into an update for ages.
I thought Steam was hard work but this is ludicrous.
The game looks gorgeous (I've just been having a dabble) but I can't say I'm happy with the problems I've had with it.
Should I have known about Windows Live? Strikes me we don't actually own these games we just rent them.
Anyway, it's sorted now and I'd like to thank you for your support

Yup, this game has great graphics and storyline. But you need a high-end computer for it...

    game installed but won't start

    Maybe someone can help me:
I installed the free Arkham Asylum demo thru Steam.
The game won't even start, every time I try I get a program error with the reasons given being a bunch of ASCII I don't understand.
This is a new system I just built: I played FEAR 2 with no problems whatsoever, Resident Evil 5 is giving me problems also: the game hangs or crashes at seemingly random times.
I don't think heat is an issue as I played for a while with Rivatuner running and GPU temps never went over about 68 C
    Help!!

Try updating your Direct X files. Alot of people make the mistake of thinking that just because W7 is DX11, the DX9 files don't need to be updated. That of course is false.

At any rate... Download details: DirectX Redist (August 2009)

    Thanks for the tip!
Now both games are working normally.
    Here's what I did:
Updated directx9 from the link above: after that Arkham would install and plays normally so far.
I also reset all my bios setting to the defaults: I had my RAM running at the XMP settings which gave me 1600 MHz, it seems to be more content running at 1333. I suspect this was the source of the Resident Evil 5 intermittent crashes.
So I guess it boils down to this: always update your drivers and reset game or bios to the most basic settings!
    Regards,
    Eric

Glad to hear the DX update worked.

As for your BIOS settings for memory, I would "manually" set the timing and voltage for the memory. I found, and read, that a lot of motherboards have problems doing this manually. I've also experienced this myself.
