Yeah looks like it (DAOU) was only on sale for a short time. No biggie.

As for Portal 2 I started late and just now got to Chapter 7 - The Reunion.

ok, so i caved in and bought homefront. i used to belong to a gaming clan, so i asked them what multi-player was like. they all said 'great - buy it!'. so i did.

couldn't buy it on steam, so i had to go into nearest city (exeter) to buy the disc.

take it home, start installing it, then it tells me i've got to download nearly 5 gigs from steam!

wtf? you can't buy it on steam, but it's on steam? i would have paid for it and downloaded overnight if i coulda...

that'll take me over three hours on my rural farm broadband connection - guess i won't be playing it until later this evening.

one good thing, in the shop it said 34.99 on the shelf, took it to the till and it was only 27.49 for special 'resist' edition

*edit* great, now it's slowed down:

ok, first impressions of homefront.

the game doesn't seem to remember my settings and controls - it's a bit tiresome having to change my screen-res and custom mouse buttons each time i start it up. guess i'll have to check out some forums.

single player: only played a bit so far: seems pretty linear, stupid enemy ai, cool graphics and story set in usa after korean takeover, the koreans aren't very nice, sweet nor gentle - just stupid! feels a bit like totalitarian hl2 scenario, with resistance fighters. semi-futuristic (2027) weapons are fun to shoot, but run out of ammo quickly, so you need to pick up new guns often. weapons fire satisfactorily, with a weighty feel and kick. voice acting pretty good and convincing.

my rig can run it at 60fps vsync-ed smoothly most of the time, but every now and then massive framerate drops for no understandable reason. i've got an onscreen cpu meter, and that's not at 100% during the drops. maybe it's physx related? or the fact i've only got 2 cores, even though they are cranked up to 4 ghz?

save progress is based on checkpoints, so if you die you go back to the last checkpoint. restarting most of them you have to listen to dialogue between npc's, and wait for them to open doors before you can progress - gets old pretty quickly.

------------------------------

multiplayer: again, only played a very small bit: seems fun with interesting maps. first server i played on, i got kicked coz i was tk-ing without knowing - if it moved, i shot at it second server, i actually won the game with k/d of 13/8

there are a couple online modes -ground control (a bit like conquest in bc2, capturing points), or team deathmatch -there's also a battle commander thingy, haven't worked out what that's about yet.

i also haven't worked out how to use unlocks, or fancy toys like uav, drones etc - again, i need to check out some forums or rtfm.

it's a shame there's no destructable environment - you can't blow holes in buildings with rpg's etc, or at least i don't know how to yet.

also a handy practice match option - where you can learn to use vehicles including flying choppers without pissing off teammates.

dedicated servers, plus you can host your own, with a battlerecorder option like bf2 - haven't tried it yet

-----------------------------------

my comments about steam above: it seems that it's not available to buy on steam in the uk, even though it connects and runs through steam when you install - annoying 5 gig download needed - not sure if that's true for whole world.

---------------------------------

so far, i'm pleased i bought it - see ya all later - off to pwn some n00bs!

*update* worked out how to do a few more multiplayer things on homefront.

interesting game mechanic whereby you can trade in points (lower your score) for extra goodies and toys, like 500 points = flak jacket body armour. you can also unlock weapons (eg rgp) or drones (like in frontlines fuel of war) and exchange them for points mid-game so you can have a uav sweep (so enemies appear on your map), a little flying shooting drone (like uav in bc2), hellfire rockets, or a little ground robot etc. basically you're gambling whether you'll score more points than what they cost...

there's a few classes of soldier with unlockable configurable weapon loadouts and abilities. you can go prone (and crouch of course) for increased accuracy.

good fun, enjoying it so far - can recommend.

shooters are more about multiplayer, so i can forgive the little problems i've experienced on singleplayer campaign. you finish campaign in a few hours, but play multiplayer for months...

I am playing Portal 2. I am maybe halfway to 3/4 of the way through now, but I unknowingly finished the game and saw the ending.
My dad was stuck on a level so I helped him out and it happened to be the last level. I didn't know it was the last level and then the credits started up.

Ah.... that bites. You might as well finish yours, even though you know the ending.... there are still some cool puzzles to solve before getting there
