Currently playing:
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (on a daily basis, still the best MP experience out there by far)
  • Iron Grip: Warlord (got it yesterday via Steam, nice little game, RTS/FPS combo goodness)
  • Red Faction: Guerrilla (every now and then, very hard to find players to play with [lobby system FTL]).

Waiting on:
  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam
  • Crysis 2
  • Battlefield 3
  • Rage
  • Dead Space 2
  • Red Orchestra 2 : Heroes of Stalingrad (looks EPIC)

I know already this is going to fill my PM inbox with some negative comments, but anyway:

I have never understood how people can play, even enjoy these games where the whole idea is to kill. I fail to understand the entertainment value of killing and violence, can not imagine how someone get his / her kicks from the amount of bodies he / she can make. The more blood, the better. Strange.

Free world, I know. You play what you want, it's not my problem. The above mentioned is only my personal opinion.

I get my kicks from a good golf or sailing simulator. Lately I've been playing Roller Coaster tycoon 3, which I find quite addictive. It's also very easy to play for a recovering person who could only use one hand and a trackball.

maybe it's psychologically similar to the reason some people find entertainment/escape/release in violent or scary movies, or driving their cars fast, or going on rollercoasters.

it's to do with imagined danger, threat, excitement and drama, but still being safe. in a game, somebody can shoot a rocket-launcher straight into my face, but all that gets damaged is my kill/death ratio.

isn't the whole point of entertainment about taking you out of your everyday life, and into something new and different, something that quickens your pulse, hightens your senses and makes you feel ALIVE.

in today's civilised society, most of us never experience real danger or threat, but maybe there's a caveman part of our brain that needs stimulation every now and again.

some people play games to relax, some play for thrills and adrenaline. some play for both, at different times.

most games/sports have a violent or combat element to them - chess, rugby, minesweeper...

personally, i really enjoy virtual simulated violence, both in shooter games and tv/movies - but totally abhor it in real life.

...or maybe you're just old and boring, Kari?

Basically, it's because we are human.

As a species, we are inherently violent and competitive. Certain genres simply appeal to those base instincts. Games merely provide a safe and diluted outlet.

Choosing to acknowledge or even enjoy this outlet is optional.
