I've just started Bioshock over again, after 2 years of not playing it.. Can't wait to finish it as I got a copy of Bisohock 2 off GameStop for really cheap and I want to start playing it as soon as possible :)
BTW, about Bioshock.. this time I promise I'll save the little girls, really..

Going to whine a bit :) I made the poor decision of buying a WoW 2 month GC instead of buying Cataclysm. Couldn't afford both because of financial constraints. There is nothing to do in game. EVERYONE is doing random HC dungeons. I activated my 10 day trial and got to level 80 and 99,9% in a few hours. Discovered a cataclysm dungeon, done that a few times. This is all there is to do. No one is willing to do WOTLK dungeons anymore. Shouted LFM, trying to start my own group, most of the whispers I got were "Wrong expansion bro".

tl;dr I got 2 months of doing nothing. Started an alt during trial to see the new Cataclysm content, it truly is amazing. Hopefully I'll get my hands on the expansion soon so I can go back to playing my level 80s and enjoying it. :)

Until then... TF2, L4D2, Amnesia the Dark Descent (when I get my courage back up to face the prison level which makes me cower in a corner in the fetal position) and ME2.

    HAHA!!
    Amnesia is a great game.

It truly does deserve the category ... "Survival Horror"
In fact, IMHO, it makes most other survival horror games seems like a walk down Sesame Street in comparison :)

Though I have not played Amnesia, I have played FEAR and Dead Space. So.... how do they compare to Amnesia? Especially Dead Space?

BTW Scare factor scale for me was FEAR, then Dead Space. On the flip side Survivor Horror, Dead Space, then maybe FEAR.

the original 1999 aliens vs predator game is fondly remembered as my scariest gaming moment, especially playing in the dark with the sound (and brain) cranked up high. i think i had a matrox g400 gfx card then - an early affordable 'dual-head' multi-monitor card - with 16 megs of vram.

(i was even poorer then than i am today, and was living in a tiny caravan - my pc, a 17" and 15" crt monitors, printers, scanners, hi-fi and dj bits and bachelor speakers took up nearly a quarter of the space - ah those were the days...)

i can't remember how much ammo i wasted playing as a marine, entering the eerily-lit alien infested spaceship, panickly spraying it all over the place in fright.

not quite a brown trouser moment, but close! i didn't feel safe walking into dark rooms for a good while after that.

some people say doom was scary, but i always thought it was a laugh...

Well to me FEAR was (still makes me jump) the scariest game i've played, followed by Dead Space.

I think Amnesia is a different kind of horror.

Its best played in the dark, with headphones on, or 5.1.

Its really hard to explain, and I probaly wont very well but ..

I liked Dead Space myself, quite a bit actually.
But in Dead Space, you had a lot of scares (or at least me) that just jumped out and shocks you. Sometimes unexpectedly.

But in Amnesia its so much more than that..the atmosphere itself is just spooky. That and the fact the game makes you feel completely helpless & lost.

Its a First Person Perspective, But its more about exploration, figuring out whats going on, and solving puzzles.

It reminded me a little bit of the Original Resident Evil ... only in the sense of exploring the Mansion and trying to figure out what was going on and solving puzzles along the way.

The only difference is .. when you encounter a baddy ... you better run and hide somewhere. You have no weapons.

So yea, a lot of the fear is from the enviroment and the fact you're totally helpless along with the story itself unfolding.

I actually quit playing the game a few times just because it creeped me out. And some areas youll be hesitant to venture into.

This might give a better idea if your interested in watching. :)

Amnesia is a horror game that preys on your psyche. It makes you imagine horrors instead of throwing them at you from a cupboard. Generally shooters like Doom and Dead Space approach monsters as something coming at you and begging for bullets. They STARTLE you.

Games like Amnesia or Silent Hill (which btw is just insane, my favorite horror game) plant an idea in your head: you're alone, it's dark, and something is out there to get you. It gives you a constant fear that something's always near. You look behind you, see nothing, try to carry on... but something makes you feel that you should check behind you again. But you can't. Because you know there's someone there.

Amnesia takes it to a whole new level though, since you have absolutely no means of defending yourself. The only thing you can do is run. Turn off your lamp, contain your screams of terror and run into the darkness. And hope that the thing following you doesn't have any friends nearby.
