Age of Empires - Age of Kings

Just upgraded from Vista Business 32bit to Win 7 Pro 32 bit

AOE working fine before upgrade but now error shown as:

"Could not initialize graphics system. Make sure that your video card and driver are compatible with DirectDraw"

I've checked the drivers are the latest. Directx is ver 11. DirectDraw enabled. Video card is ATI Radeon HD 3650 with latest driver.

Tried compatibility modes, disabling Aero, re-install AOE, XP virtual mode. Nothing works.

    Any ideas anyone?

Check device manager to make sure it is installed and working properly. Type device manager in search>display tab. Is your card there. and does it have a yellow triangle on it?

    Thanks for the response Ken,

The card is shown as enabled and working fine. In fact, as a result of advice on another thread regarding a similar problem with a different game I disabled the card to see if the game loads with the Windows generic graphics in play - no joy.

This is a very very old thread, and I apologize for bumping it. But I just got my first Windows 7 laptop, and was dismayed to find this exact same error verbatim. I was just wondering if the OP (or realisitically, anyone else at all), had found a solution to the DirectDraw error.

    Thanks!
