Playing old and new games problem

Right! where do i start?

Well first of all great forum, been reading about and its been really helpful thank you!

Next, i'd like to share with you my desktops Spec:

AMD Phenom™ II X4 955 Black Quad Core Processor AM3 (3.20GHz, 8MB Cache)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium Edition - 64bit English
New Stylish Mini-Tower Micro ATX Chassis with 300W PSU - Piano Black
ASUS M4A785T-M Mainboard (DDR3), with integrated HDMI/DVI/VGA Graphics - MATX
8GB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM - ( 4x2GB )
1TB Serial ATA 2 Hard Drive with 32MB Buffer
22x Dual Layer DVD Writer Super Format +R/-R/RW/RAM
512MB ATI Radeon HD4200 Graphics - Hybrid CrossFireX™ and Full HD Support (M4A785T-M)
7.1 High Definition onboard sound card - for 8 Channel Cinema sound
iiyama 24" full HD monitor
Now with that in mind, i've been trying to play:
 • supreme commander
 • Call of Duty 4
 • Battlefield vietnam
and all 3 of these games i am experiencing jerkyness during game play or especially
when you have to move about alot (Particularly worse when playing CoD4 and battlefield vietnam)
Supreme commander seems to work fine if i run it on lower settings but obviously buying a more powerful machine i expected to run it on a much higher level especially when my laptop can run some of these games better!

I need advice on what i can do to fix these problems i am experiencing and whether its a particular hardware or software i am running thats causing it in which case i'll have to consider a replacement part obviously.

Hope you can help
Thanks
Jay

Well, to be honest, your graphics card isnt good at all. Thats your problem. Now if you want to play those game on full graphics, Buy a new one. Sorry mate, thats not a gaming machine at all. Its probably meant for extreeme multi-tasking, like having 70 windows open at once.
good luck.

Well you have an exellent processor, so lets say a ATI Radeon 4870?
I bit costly, but im sure you can afford it. An exellent card. Then you can max-out everything.
Also, if you would like to have the best card in the world (its only 600 pounds) ATI radeon 4970 is the best one.
And i am not kidding, its the best card in the world. Good Luck choosing

i've been looking at all sorts of cards today but mostly the Nvidia Geforce variants. Would having a nvidia card instead of an ATI card cause problems? I know some functions on the geforce cards will disable itself if it detects an ATI card already intalled.

Been looking at the GTS 250, GTX 260 variants.

Coolness doesn't the ATI Radeon 4870 and ATI Radeon 4970 require a PCI-E 2.1 instead of your normal PCI-E 2.0?

Thanks

Youre right, the 4970 requires pci-e 2.1 but i dont think the 4870 does. Also, i assumed your mobo is capable. And i personally use NVidia. The reason for this is that back in the old days ATI used to not make drivers for ubuntu. They do now tho. The reason i recommended ATI was simply because those are the best cards on the market. I wish i could deny that but i cant. But nVidia has some splendid card out there too, just surf around.

Capable of the 2.1? No its not, it only supports upto 2.0, the Asus mobo i have now consists of:

1 processor - Socket AM3
4 memory - DIMM 240-pin
1 PCI Express 2.0 x16
1 PCI Express x1
2 PCI

I've just had a quick read through of the 4870 cards and its really tempting! Everyone seems to recommend the powerColor variant running the 512 instead of the 1gb since its cheaper and barely any difference in performance.

What do you think?

Well, you can brag more with 1gb and i think for the most instense games you'll be needing 2x the current memory. (too bad you cant have the 4970 )
And btw, i can see from the way you type, you arent new to forums? Stay here, help ppl (not that we need users tho, plently already, the problem is, they post one tread, and then leave)

Gigabyte is ok, and popular. I personally have Gainward. Basically the only thing when choosing the manufacturer is the availablity of drivers on their site. I've never heard anything negative about gigabyte, so go ahead, (dam i envy you, you can just go and buy a new GPU)
