You can disable automatic updates. Steam works great for me, and it must work at least somewhat for the other 2 million users who are usually online at any given time.

Get Steam and watch for deals. :)
Steam fails. Steam is a good idea. See a game online, buy it, download it, update it, play it, download stuff for it. But, it fails. Steam is a great idea but is implemented horrifically. I own Portal, All the Half-Life's, and Team Fortress 2 and download times are BAD! I dread even updating these games because it will take me 1 hour each even with the fastest internet connection. Steam offers a nice interface, online store, and a lot of content (L4D is epic!) but updating and downloading games and content such as movies, trailers, mods, ect. sucks. I don't want to update something every time I wan't to play it when I know it works with my system.

Example: Just spent 15 minutes downloading a Steam L4d Trailer on to my Laptop. I unplugged my laptop to go sit on my couch and watch it. Turns out, even though I downloaded the video to my hard drive, I need an internet connection to watch it...
Get a better laptop or connection then. I get a solid 512kb download speed for games and other stuff on steam.

yea bioshock is one of my favorite games, i beat it for xbox and was contemplating buying it for PC considering it is only $20. But I figure I will wait a month and just get the second one (which looks amazing)

    Yup.

Very entertaining, especially with 5 buddies/players.

EDIT: I even bought the Characters Pack lol.

EDIT#2: The Defence Alliance 2 Mod sucks though... Big time.

yea i got source. I was contemplating getting grid, but not sure how much fun with a keyboard that would be.
Probably plug in a 360 controller and play it like that
yeah any driving game is going to be pretty unplayable on a keyboard but the 360 controllers work great. for pc gaming you pretty much have to grab some good FPS games like MW2 just for the experience.
