    Oblivion crash at startup

Well that's pretty much it. I've tried everything, patching, compatibility modes, reinstalling, installing the expansion, whatsoever. It just won't work.
And well, right before you say it, my PC CAN run Oblivion smoothly, as I've done that before on Vista and XP.

Can anyone come up with anything?

With just that info it's not really possible to figure why it's crashing. I can say that my laptop runs Oblivion on x64 Build 7057 and did run it as well with x86 Build 7000 so it's likely driver related.

I fixed mine by setting my video settings correctly using the autorun setup off the disk.
Seems it would hang because the video was set too low.

    @ LightReaver:
Are you trying to play the normal Oblivion and if so, which patch have you installed?

I recently bought a copy of Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition, which comes with the Nights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions. I managed to install them all perfectly and it automatically patches it to version 1.2.0416 (latest) and it starts up and runs perfectly.

And I see you have not specified which build of the Windows 7 Beta you have installed. I use Build 7000 and Oblivion works perfectly on it for me. Maybe a reinstall is all it would take to fix it?

Ok, you really havent given sufficient evidence for me to provide you with better advice but here are a few suggestions that im going to presume, because they arent listed as done, you havent tried:

Update your GPU drivers, if there is none listed on your GPU companies website, try google for a 3rd party driver suited to your card.

If that doesnt work, please post more of your computer and OS specs as it will make it much easier to give you help/advice.

    Thanks,
    Will

    Dual Monitor Fix

I have a 16:9 monitor (setup as secondary in my normal environment) that I like to run games on. I was having Crash-on-Startup issues when trying to run Oblivion in this fashion.

The previous poster was on the right track, but there is a software fix (actually 2):

    1) disable the non-Oblivion monitor with windows display settings and then run the Oblivion Launcher to create the settings.ini. Play the game, and re-enable the monitor after you're done.

    or

    2) do fix #1 to obtain the initial settings, then use a program like UltraMon to force the Oblivion.exe to run on the proper screen (as primary) and disable the non-Oblivion monitor during game-play.

I created a direct shortcut on the desktop to Oblivion.exe (circumventing the launcher) for this option. It works just fine this way.

    Its the dual monitors

    Thanks heaps John.

I've spent 6+ hours trying to resolve this and I soon as I saw your solution it all rang true. I'd replace display drivers, tried various Windows7 UAC settings but its all down to Oblivion in full screen mode not handling multiple displays well (nb I had one login where multi displays did work, but others that did not).

By simply instructing my daughters to disable the second display when playing Oblivion its all good now.

Thought I'd bump this instead of starting a new thread....

I have a Windows 7 64bit Install that is only a few days old, had to reinstall , so all the latest drivers and everything. The game work fine on this exact system previously with XP64bit.

I have freshly installed Oblivion off the disc and have also tried with all of the DLC. (SI, KotN, Horse armor, mehrunes razor, orrey, spell tomes, thieves den, vile lair, and wizards tower) the patch installed is ShiveringIsles_v1.2.0416English. was going to install the full FCOM mod but had to make sure the original game worked first.

I have tried disabling and unplugging my second screen and disabling multicore gpu in the drivers but still crashes in exactly the same place.

Probably doesn't help any but Fallout3 does work fine (being in a newer version of the same engine) so has any other game i have tried playing so far.

    Any help would be great

    cheers

    Andrew
