you still need dx9 as most games out there use these dll/api's for various things (audio/video/joystick)...
these games would have to be rewritten to use dx10 or 11 (to which extent i do not know...)
this is where backwards compatibility is not included oob (at least dx9 wise)...

When first installing 7 and running smack into the "no OpenGL supported" error I say "Oops! forgot to install 9c again!". 9c is backward compatible to the older DX6-8 games there and still goes on even the 64bit 7 without a glimmer!

When running into that particular error I then remembered that I hadn't gotten around to install the older 9c on a fresh install of 7 at the time but simply was checking each program out for any problems. Once I stopped and installed 9c and restarted the game up the error was no longer seen.

The good thing is that the older direct x there will go right on without seeing any effect on 11 since it's simply adding to and not canceling the new direct x out. Once I have the latest release and remaked of the same game on that will show right away since the games was just released this week being the updated version.

they meant hardware wise...
i mean you have heard of dx 10 and dx 10.1 hardware
that means dx9 hardware does not support dx10 or 10.1 specific features but dx 10 and dx 10.1 can use dx9 features (and in the case of 10.1 use 10 hardware features...)
it also just means now you dont need special hardware to experience dx 11 (although performance will be better with dx11 hardware)....

That would certainly be a newer model then the Radeon HD 2600XT presently in use here. At it supports some of the latest titles.
