Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge: LAN

    Hi there,

I am having trouble connecting to my friends to play C&C:RA2-YR via LAN.

We use a program called Hamachi to establish the LAN connection and it works for all other games.

I load the game, and enter the LAN menu. I can see the names of players if they are in the lobby, but game names do not appear. We all have the same game version, firewall is off, Hamachi is the priority network in windows, the game was reinstalled about 4 times. I have run everything as an Administrator.

I played the game just fine on XP (with Hamachi). Now it doesn't work properly on Windows 7.

My friends are I are fairly tech savvy and we are well and truly stumped. Any ideas?

    Thanks so much!

Hi mrjbray and wlecome to the seven forums

Networking in both Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge is quite small.
Reason being, both Vista and Win 7 no longer support IPX/SPX Protocol.

Iv'e been skimming the net for some possible solutions.
    There was about 2.
    1. download or copy the file for IPX/SPX and install it on the machine. Problem is that the file is from XP.
It installs 100%, just that it doesnt install the transport protocol for IPX/SPX

    2. Copy WSock32.dll in to your game folder (RA2) and run the game and all networking issues is solved.
Well I wish that was true, point is no IPX/SPX

The real solution, unless microsoft magically makes a patch of some kind to bring back the IPX/SPX protocol, Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge can't network in Vista / Win 7.

Most new games that are released today support TCP/IP which is better than IPX/SPX.

I'm so sorry for the bad news.

you can download a file (wsock32.dll) which you simply puts into your Westwood/Red Alert 2 directory, the game will work on lan.

    Thank you!!!

This patch allows you to play Tiberian Sun and RA2 over LAN on Windows 2000 and above.
The patch makes use of the UDP protocol instead of IPX which no longer requires you to have IPX installed.

Supported Operating Systems by this release of the multiplayer patch:
Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

simply download that patch (zip) file then extract it, and read the "readme"

You can use this patch in Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun.
    Regards

Thank you sam22sam for this fix. It works perfectly
The file that I had must of been corrupt somehow.

    Hello:)

Using the wsock32.dll IPX over UDP wrapper is half the solution (Understorm's patch).

You also need to use Tunngle instead of Hamachi to play over the internet, because the game requires UDP broadcast, which Hamachi doesn't have.

As a bonus try an app I made to play Red Alert 2 at native resolution (the game will look fantastic):

Make sure you go to origin games folder and then look for RA2 there. Had the same problem.
