Could you be a little more specific? And a game title might help.
You might want to look at my how to ask for help guide.
Thanks
I think I know what the person is talking about. The only game I noticed this happen to me is on Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta. My default/max setting is 1600x900. Since the game can only go full screen, I lowered the resolution to get better frame rates. Once lower resolution is used (1280x720 as example), it would change to that setting but not fill the whole screen and a black frame is shown.
Hmm, now that I think about it an easier way to explain would be...think of playing a lower resolution on windowed mode but actually playing in full screen.
More specific...
I start avatar,i go to....
OPTIONS/DISPLAY,to set my preferences, and i set my resolution to 1920x1080p,anti-aliasing x8 etc.In diplay options i have to choose between DirectX 9 and DirectX 10.
So when i set the display in DirectX 9 and start the game everything is ok.
BUT when i set the display in DirectX 10 and start the game i get a black empty frame around the screen.
Why?
Possibly your settings are too high to run the game at MAX settings in such a large resolution with DX10. (some reason when i read that it made no sense, if this is the case, let me know )
Maybe try lowering some of the settings, AA and the resolution, then switching to DX10.
Hope this helps.
Solved.
I set the ati catalyst too 1920x1080 and then i enable the gpu scaling and no more black frame around screen when i set games in 1920x1080p and on DX10 display.
