    Is Win7's Solitaire broken?

The ratio of winnable games I'm being dealt in Windows Solitaire seems to be pretty low. In standard non-timed setup, out of 911 games dealt, I've won 178. The rest were unwinnable deals. I've even used undo to "cheat" at times and still found deals unwinnable.

I do not recall WinXP Solitaire being this bad and I never have odds that bad out of an actual deck at a random shuffle.

I don't see any difference in the ratio of "winnable" games, compared to other OS'. You must just be on a run of bad luck. My winning percentage has always been around 15%.

Since Vista onwards, the amount of winnable games has been lower compared to XP's version, however it's not 'broken' so to speak.

I'd like to be able to copy ALL the WinXP games into my Win7. The games that come with Win7 are sluggish, hard to view, and generally don't permit smooth operation. I don't know why Microsoft messed with something that was working so well. I guess they just don't like people with eyes older than a 13-year old's.
Solitaire, Hearts, FreeCell, Spider -- I'd like to play all the XP versions rather than the Win7 versions.

Must be your system. If you have Professional, just copy the files from your virtual machine. Better yet, play it on your virtual machine (or integrate via XP mode).

I'm puzzled by this. I'm using single card draw times setup, and seeing about
a 90% win ratio with backing up at times. I had to play about 500 games to
get it up there, but eventually figured out that you should usually chose the
right hand card if you have a choice---to prioritize digging down on the right
and depriortize 'getting the kings down'.

What I learned was that by using the cheat mode to the max for a while
I learned what I was doing wrong and greatly improved my sucess rate.

cheating as much as neccessary, I've won 33 of the last 35 games.

I have been keeping track of the dealt hands and Windows 7 issues the same hands over and over again. Most of the repeaters are losing hands. Think about it. If the computer can instantly issue a winning hand if you ask it too then it can also conjure up a losing hand just as easily. Anytime I get close to going to 54% I start getting a lot of losing hands and they are always the same ones I have lost several times before.

Its not so much as broken, its quite useless for the following reasons.1.It cannot shuffle the cards from deal to deal.2. it bunches up cards to make it impossible to create a winning run.3.The same run of cards keep appearing time after time.On occassions i have had a red run then a complete black set dealt to me and this impossible if the cards were shuffled properly. The chances of this happening in real life are astronomically high yet Windows 7 Klondike Solitaire keeps doing it.Percentage wise i win roughly 5% of the games dealt to me.Anyone who claims that they regularly win 20 to 30% of games dealt to them are not being truthful. The game is flawed by bad coding pure and simple, otherwise why do the same games keep repeating themselves ? I have read so many arguments regarding the problems with Klondike Solitaire and explanations as to why these faults keep occurring but in the end it all comes down to the simple fact it comes free with the soft ware and MS dont care two figs about it.Try this open Klondike and when you lose, which you will.Shut it down and open it again from start and see what happens-you will lose. Its almost impossible to win a game from the start without using the play again function, which re-shuffles them.To put it mildly the game is flawed and MS should just dump it and re-code the game making it more realistic.Good publicity too....
