To be specific about my question - Can you not toggle from DX11 to 9 in Dirt2 like these games do as shown in this post??? - Force DirectX 9?

I'm asking why Dirt2 can't be forced in a lower DX mode like the games I spoke about here - Force DirectX 9? In short why does it need to be done by hack.

Some games do and some don't. BFBC2 is another that doesn't but you can make the change in the settings.ini located in "C:\Users\Your Name\Documents\BFBC2" Just locate the following line,

    DxVersion=auto

and change it from auto to DX9, DX10 or DX11 depending on which you want to force. Auto will only run at the level the video card supports.

In regards to Dirt 2 unlike BFBC2 which comes with support for all three versions, Dirt 2 only supports DX 9 and DX 11. May be one reason the devs left the option out of the in game settings.

Yeah, I gather that DX11 will become default as more and more games and hardware is released. Looking at it from that perspective, I guess I can see why the initial games had a simpler option as there weren't too many DX10 capable systems, and it was also an easier way to show off the differences between the two Modes.

    Maybe

Because it requires it. That be like trying to play Shattered Horizon in dx9. It NEEDS dx11 or it does not work.

You obviously aren't getting my question, nor reading my posts.

At any rate stormy did and thus answered the question.

    Thanks

Now I'm not sure what you mean here...

...But a DX11 game can be played in a lower (DX9 or 10) mode. It might not be as pretty as DX11 but it will play.

As you've pointed out, DirectX is backwards compatible

    DX 10 actually,

    Shattered Horizon

Considering when that game came out it couldn't possibly have been DX 11 only if no other reason than Nvidia didn't have any DX 11 cards out.

PS I just read this, so don't shoot me...

Please, make Shattered Horizon work on XP!

Sorry, it just isn't feasible. The game engine is fully designed around DirectX 10 and it would require a complete engine re-write to make the game to use DirectX 9. Additionally, no DirectX 9 level video card would have the needed performance to run the visuals acceptably even at low settings, so chances are that if you are using a PC that was purchased back when Vista wasn't available, it doesn't have the hardware to run the game anyway. OS upgrade (or a computer upgrade) is the only option. Sorry.

I guess they made this game to specifically only run in at least DX10 mode. That's interesting.

    Game looks interesting BTW.

You have proven my point. I got it wrong, it needs bleh vista, but it still needs dx10 to run. It gets what DX it wants or nothing. Some games can run in different dx modes, others cannot. Some games like valve games get advanced options where you can use a command such as -dxlevel 80 which sets dx8. Point is, it uses what it wants. You have asked if there was a way to run dirt2 in dx11? If it wants DX9 thats what its going to use. Blame the programmers for not taking advantage. I cannot understand what you are getting at. If it can switch then it has an option. Find it and use it.

Edit: dirt2 should do it automatically.

I don't have a problem admitting when I'm wrong, I have a problem being told I said something that I did not say!!!

I'm done with this.... debate? The record speaks for itself
