Windows 7: How to Add a Search Filter to Windows Explorer

12 Apr 2011   #11

Win 7 Ult + Starter, XP Pro +Home, 2kAS, Linux Mint 8, SuperOS

I would suggest a 3rd party route:

Search My Files

is as flexible and comprehensive as you could wish for in a filesearch tool.

And you could turn indexing off.

This one is actually quite easy you'll notice the format explorer uses when you add the filter i.e "Artist:" I was able to use any meta field found within my "Audiobook" Library(Libraries are always indexed). The same wasn't true accessing that same folder directly from it's "My Computer" hierarchy although I've designated that directory as one containing music, Libraries apparently have higher priorities,
I dig libraries now that I've gotten used to them, at first glance they seemed ubsurd, not so anymore.

I stumbled accross this thread as for audiobooks you don't need high bitrates at all, it's only a voice and mp3 players only so large I wish to filter out everything over 128 and downscale it so I simply typed Bitrate:128 and voila explorer kicked in with options for the meta field I was interested in and magically the search turned into this; bitrate:near cd quality over 128 kbps .
I'ts probably dependant on how you've "customized" a particular directory i.e. music, images, movies ect as you'll note
each directory so customized looks different than it's fellows. Good luck, cheers

add search filter greyed out
How do I add new search options, especially for a plain file folder. The tutorials show a bunch of options but all I see are date and size, even after I extend the size of search box. BTW I've read all previous posts and help on topic but answers don't apply.
