    HD capacity warning graphic...change threshold?

I know it's a minor irritation but is there a way to adjust the threshold for the hard drive low free-space warning graphic as displayed in Windows "Computer" view? Seems pretty useless to have a 2TB drive graphic turn to red when nearly 200GBs of space remains available. Would be convenient if the threshold could be set as a user defined physical number, not antiquated factory pre-set percentages.

Correct me if I'm wrong but my thinking is that free-space only really becomes relevant (on a non-bootable drive) when it comes to defragging. If this is true then a 2TB drive should really require no more free-space than a 2GB drive for that utility to perform effectively.

    Cheers.

    See this tutorial:

The setting you need is in this location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Search\Gathering Manager

Thanks for the reply Loki. I do have a little egg on my face though. You did correctly answer my question the only problem is...I didn't ask the right question.

What I really should have asked is is there a way to adjust the HD free-space level indicator so that it doesn't turn red until a more reasonable limit is reached (i.e. 10GB-20GB remaining on a 2TB drive)?

    Cheers!

    Hi golem,

I've not found a way to change that. Seems it should be a setting in the registry...

i don't think there is a way. altough there is alot of space left in terms of capacity the warning is tied to percentage of HD, so even if it is 2 TB when it gets to 85% for example it will go off even though there are a lot of Gbs left.

I think that your immediate concern would be to make sure that the HD is not the cause

Just the route I was hoping for...that someone would have insight on a reg or config tweak.

HD's are all fine, it's just a sad fact that MS (as dupmj23 has stated) has settled on a set percentage factor for determining a low-level trigger. Really should be either user adjustable or configured on a sliding scale.

Think I'll just turn a color-blind eye to the misleading graphic..been doing it for years anyhow.

    Cheers!
