slow dvd burning

At this moment I'm burning a data dvd using Windows Explorer. It formatted the empty dvd and I had to drag my files (more than 4 gB) to the empty dvd folder. Then it started copying the files (burning them). But it's extremely slow? It is transferring the files at a speed of about 594 kB per seconds and burning the disc this way will take about more than 2 hours? Don't know if it matters but I was using the Live File System.

It's a notebook I just bought with Windows 7 preinstalled.

Do I have to do something special like setting the write speed somewhere? Is it normal that burning a dvd this way takes sooooo long?

Yes, but more than 2 hours for a full 4.76 gB dvd? When I use Nero to burn a movie dvd it takes me perhaps 10 minutes. I should tell you that I'm also burning the data from a usb external drive to the dvd folder. Perhaps that matters too.

Same thing happened to me with my old dvd burner. A firmware update fixed the problem.

It's a week old notebook so it couldn't be an old firmware issue as the notebook is brandnew.

I've now installed Nero and it burned 5 gb on a dual layer dvd in about 20 minutes. Much more acceptable. And I first dragged the files from my external usb drive to the Downloads folder and burned them from there.

Haven't tried the 'mastered' dvd version yet. Don't know exactly the difference. I thought 'live file system' is like 'multisession' and 'mastered' is like 'no multisession'?

Maybe it was slow because I first burned the files from my external usb drive instead of the notebook's harddrive?

Or maybe burning in Windows Explorer always uses the 'least write speed' option? Couldn't see any setting to change write speed. I just had to drag the files into the Windows Explorer DVD folder. Write speed wasn't mentioned anywhere.

Has anyone tried to burn a complete dvd (4 gb) using the Windows Explorer dragging way? How long did it take?
