Further investigation leads me to suspect that the problem was being caused by the screensaver I was using -- Serene Screen Marine Aquarium 3 (which worked fine under Vista). Since switching to one of the standard Windows screensavers I have not so far had a recurrence of the "deep coma" problem.
i have the same problem, if i put seven in stand-by i can't wake up the pc. also the pc doesn't go in a complet sleep mode (some fans don't stop)
If i put in sleep mode the same pc with win xp everything stops and i can wake it up with the power on switch.
(i use a pcie raid controller w bios, so the post is quite long on my pc)
Any idea ?

its just happened to me........ i had to do a hard reboot, all fans remained active as did the HDD, but it wouldnt pull itself out of standby, its not sleeping b/c the machine still runs...
power management is set to high, & ive disabled screensaver settings..??
strange, its never happened before 10mins ago...., could it be related to an update we've all received..??

Just today, my computer started whigging out and going comatose if I left it long enough for the screen saver to come on. I'm not sure why this happened, but it could be because I finally activated and updated my system. I had my screen saver set to Electric Sheep, which works shoddily on this any way, unless you feel like fiddling around a little. No great loss.
I've now set my screen saver to one of the included screensavers, ribbons. And I manually configured the system to never ever hibernate again. I think this will probably solve my problem, and I'll report back once I've verified it.
Thank you for the advice and help previously given - saved me at least an hour or two of troubleshooting.

Reading some of the other posts makes me realise what an ignoramus I am in these matters hence an even greater need for assistance!
Ever since installing Windows 7 on a dual boot basis as an alternative to my Windows XP installation I have experienced problems with the standby function, or rather awaking from sleep mode. The implications are rather more serious with Windows 7 there being no standby function as such and there appears to be no way of waking the computer from sleep mode other than to do a hard re-boot by removing the source of power as currently it will not respond to either the mouse or keyboard or even the power button.
Regarding the the Windows XP installation recovery from standby mode is now effected by use of the power button (as opposed to user of either the mouse or keyboard hitherto) which restores Windows XP without however re-booting as in the case of Windows 7 installation.
I have noted references in forum posts that the installation of Windows 7 effects one's bios settings but this being unknown area to me I would wish to be better informed before attempting to make any modifications there n order to effect a solution.
Currently on accessing the America Megatrends bios under Power the drop down menu indicates against Suspense mode - S3 only followed by ACPI support - No and finally ACPI APICS Support as being enabled
Frankly the foregoing references are meaningless to me but hopefully may suggest the source of the problem to someone better informed. All assistance towards finding a remedy would e appreciated.
There is a difference between sleep and hibernate. Personally no matter what pc or windows version I've had this is the only one that has ever woke up from sleeping as it should, I don't know if it would from a hibernate though.
Similar issue here:
I had these settings:
Turn off display: 10 mins
Put computer to sleep: 10 mins
and when it would go to 'sleep' everything seemed normal.
then, when i hit the spacebar to awaken, it boots up from a hard boot and I get the BSOD error message.
Turn sleep off and I have no issues.
I experimented with hibernate mode last evening, however I couldn't get it out of hibernate, what is the trick to that? I turned it back off.
This seems to be a recurring theme with Windows 7, and my only real complaint about it.
My computer has no problem with Hibernate, but will not wake from sleep either. I have yet to check my BIOS but I am reasonably sure that is not causing it.
NOTE: Sleep worked for me with Vista, therefor it is an issue with Seven.

With all the customization currently available, it is imperative that you check both your BIOS settings and your power plan settings in control panel to insure proper operation. For example, you might not have your mouse set as allow this device to wake the computer under: control panel>mouse>hardware>properties>change settings>power management same goes for the keyboard. Then check in the BIOS under Power>ACPI Suspend Type [S1&S3] ACPI Support[Enabled] Then APM and check the keyboard setting. To enter your BIOS(for the unknowing) it's usually the delete key or F2 during boot however, if your computer has a prompt to enter setup choose the specified key. Look around in your BIOS using the arrow keys. Each item will have several sub-selections to investigate. If you see any obvious changes-make the adjustment accordingly then hit F10 to save changes and your computer will reboot. If you are uncertain, write down the specifics and press escape then exit without saving changes and google or WIKI the information to make an educated decision. Hope this helps
