i'm having the same problems with two different Windows 7 systems. one is running 64-bit rc1 and the other is running 32-bit rc1.

i didn't notice until i went to look for notepad and it was gone. then i notice that microsoft office was missing.

and i did no hacking at all and both of these systems were clean installs from wiped hard drives.

It seems that on some setups, there are GUI issues with the RC builds.
Try a Repair Install to see if it fixes this.

Also remember that the Non supported builds (over 7100) are for internal testing of changes and can cause bugs to pop up in other areas unexpectedly, so this could be the case for those having this issue on higher than 7100 builds.

    SOLVED

    Hi guys,

I found the cause of the misteriously disappearing Windows 7 desktop icons and the reason why Show desktop icons now and then gets unchecked.

It’s INFRARECORDER !! Try for yourselves, when you start Infrarecorder and close it again, go have a look at “Show desktop icons”, it is unchecked (but the icons are still there). Check it on again and start Infrarecorder…. it is unchecked again.

This Windows 7 “bug” is irritating me since the beginning and now I found the cause: It’s Infrarecorder which is causing this problem.
Test it, please let me know and spread the news

I have the same problem. Some icons which are pinned on the toolbar down are missing and are replaced by a default windows icon. The apps are there, they are working, but their icons aren't there.

    Icons disappear from taskbar

I found a solution -- it may work for you. Turns out that PerfectDisk and Avast (anti-virus) conflict. If you have these two programs, go into PerfectDisk, Drive Properties, Excluded Files and put the folder that has Avast (Alwil) and its sub-folders into Excluded Files. Both vendors know their products conflict and say they are working on solution. Meantime, try this. If you have other programs that run in the background, do a Google search with these words (no quotes and substitute actual names): "Program One Program Two conflict" That's how I learned of PerfectDisk/Avast conflict. Post back if this works.
