Probably the fans dying, or its still just overheating.

Install Speedfan to get variable fan speed if available. You can then monitor the actual temps to see if they exceed the maximum for the mobo - google to find the max temp list.

If it is a tower then consider adding a case fan. If a laptop, elevate the rear by about an inch at all times or buy a cooling pad.

What temps are you getting on the cpu: Core Temp

Are the fans in the case running loud or is it the power supple fan making noise or perhaps the fan on the cpu itself. Is there a separate GPU with fans.

I really doubt that the fact it is running Win7 is the issue. I have never seen any difference between XP and Win7 on any of my machines, if anything Win7 is less of a hog on my system resources.

Many of the older Dell laptops (similar to the 5160 model, anyway, for which there was a class action settlement) have heat problems. Vacuuming is not as good as taking the panel under the keyboard off and using compressed air - but don't use over 50# or you can do damage. In the case of the 5160, Dell realized it had a problem and put out a reactive fan control update. They also muted the CPU's heat reporting ability so the user can't see what's going on. This is a serious issue because that heat can do a lot of damage.

Its a dell so get i8kfangui. Thats a graphical Windows application to show the internal temperatures and to control the fan operation on the Dell Inspiron/Latitude/Precision notebook series.
