Can't change a PDF document while previewing in Windows Explorer

Chalk this one up on the list of inane annoyances.

Whenever a PDF document is selected in Windows Explorer, the document is being Previewed, I am unable to make specific changes to that document when I open it in either Acrobat Pro or Foxit.

The specific changes include: note annotations, adding lines, objects, text boxes, call out boxes, images.

For some reason, highlighting doesn't produce the same error (weird?)

Preview seems to be stealing the permissions to save a file because i guess it is accessing the file too.

    The error is:

The document could not be saved. The file may be

read-only, or opened by another user, please save

the document with a different name or in a

    different folder
The solution is to de-select the document from Explorer and then save the file. However, this is extremely irritating. I select the document in Explorer before I open it, so of course the file is still selected! In order to get around this, I have to manually de-select any file that I want to save, OR turn off Preview.

Any workaround for this so that Preview doesn't take over when I want to make changes to a file?

Does this happen with any type of document (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Music, Pictures, etc.) or just with specific documents? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to duplicate this issue and can't seem to do so.

Additionally, when you open the file, do you just do it by clicking on it or do you go to the program first then open it?

You are right its a specific filetype! The filetype in question is .PDF and it seems to only occur when I am editing a PDF file in either Acrobat, or Foxit Pro. When I add a note, or line, object, etc... to the PDF, and try to save it, while Preview Pane is showing the preview, I get the error.

I am opening the files directly from Windows Explorer via a double-click or Right-click open as.

It comes down to the extensions Explorer uses to preview the files, the way Adobe programmed them.

I see. Speaking of Explorer Extensions. Is there anywhere that you know of where extensions can be downloaded for non-Windows standard filetypes, like .avi for example?

I checked out this article but that app provides thumbnail snapshots and not actually the ability to preview.

Also, is there a way to get a preview, if you have a video app, other than WMP as the default video player?
