Every time I open a .exe file it opens the "open with" dialog box

I have ASUS Windows 7 x32bit and I have tried everything on the internet, every time that I try to open a .exe file it will open the "open with" dialog box instead. I have already established that I have not got a virus because what happened was I stupidly selected adobe accidentally when it didn't know what to open the file with and I didn't even say to do it always with this type of file but it did it for them all anyway, so I followed advice of uninstalling adobe and that has gotten me to just a blank icon for every single .exe file because it doesn't know what to open the file with and displays the "open with" dialog box.
Please help I need this computer and this Profile.
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter.
PS: Keep in mind that I am not very computer savvy either.
