You are correct, this is why it takes longer than a 3rd party defragger. As for Paragon Hard Disk Manager. I have purchased their software for five years. It is very diversified and can perform complex HDD tasks. However, it's not for a novice user.
The WIn7 defragger can move System files in order to shrink more space? Are you sure about that?

The only tool I've ever found that does this is the offline system files defrag on PerfectDisk10 trial.

Free Paragon Rescue disk can recover deleted partitions and files. I also have their HD manager but find Partition Wizard CD does a better job for Win7 for free.

Just because the OP had problems with the program does that make it so bad that you should not use it,what about the thousands of users who have no problems?
I have not used it nor will I because I am happy with what I am using at present.
OP would have been better off just posting a warning that there may be a problem and to take care when using the program.

I'm now running Vista SP1 and intend to stay here. Farewell 7.
Why would you forsake an OS due to an unnecessary defrag program? Go with Windows 7 and leave the defrag alone. Windows 7 is set to automatically defrag.

Hi Greg,
I think Windows 7 defragger does move system files, to some extent. Here's a snip from the Engineering Windows article I linked before at:
Disk Defragmentation – Background and Engineering the Windows 7 Improvements - Engineering Windows 7 - Site Home - MSDN Blogs :
Among the other changes under the hood in Windows 7 are the following:
Defragmentation in Windows 7 is more comprehensive – many files that could not be re-located in Windows Vista or earlier versions can now be optimally re-placed. In particular, a lot of work was done to make various NTFS metadata files movable. This ability to relocate NTFS metadata files also benefits volume shrink, since it enables the system to pack all files and file system metadata more closely and free up space “at the end” which can be reclaimed if required.

Tom, very good to know.

Thanks for the confirm of niceget's nice get.

This is the first I've heard of it in almost weekly threads on Shrink problems where every solution under the sun was offered except the built-in one - maybe due to Win Defragger's legacy?

Will try it as soon as it comes up again.
