this didn't help but thanks for trying! doesn't this just affect the desktop? it's the folders i need to change I think. jan

sorry I didn't even know you could move things around arbitrarily in XP folders as you've described, probably because I mainly work in details view.

excuse me if i misunderstand but are you trying to move files around in a folder and they wont stay in the order you want

Thanks. I was about to follow these instructions but decided to create a system restore point first. Now I seem to have lost the ability to create a restore point although there are some which have been made automatically! What do I do now please? Jan
