In YOUR opinion. I knew my comment was going to start another debate. Never had a HDD fail, not even the really old ones from defragging. Much less newer ones. Every time you use the computer, every time you create or delete a file, you are contributing to the slow fragmentation of your computer's file system. Keeping it defragged helps with battery life.

On my desktop i use tuneup utilities 2010,
although i have the registry cleaner utility switched off it is set to defrag when the system is idle . only the other day i thought i would check the defragmentation on all my discs ,externals included and the message back after a short scan was that the discs do not need defrag.
so i think i shall install it on the laptop also . it has an added bonus feature of boosting the startup of programmes and allows me to pipeline firefox making FF a bit quicker.

Boohbah, did you check out the links I posted on the previous page? Or did you already find where to enter the serial number?

Ok done that, the forum link is great thanks , i shall read more in-depth later,
I did notice that the G555 is very new and i suspect has the latest drivers , the Fn + F8 solution to disable the trackpad when using a mouse is the easiest ,and lois has grasped that concept, my eldest son was using the laptop for homework and complained to lois that the text was doing weird things and jumbling up his sentences, lois told him to switch off the "Mousepad" and showed him the Fn button and then suggested F8 too ,so terminology aside she got it.
later this evening whe i get some time i shall go back and try enter the laptops details including serial and see what it says in respect to new drivers.
keep you posted on that one.

Tuneup Utilities sets off a flashing red light with most install guys. It is then a race to see how fast you can get it off the HD, hope there's a restore point where it was installed, if not hold your breath to see what damage it has done.

This and other similar suites are tweak utlities but Win7 needs absolutely no tweaking other than normal system settings. It will always work against you in the long run. In many cases, it can come back to bite you hard. We see these cases every day here.

I use CCleaner and Auslogics Disk and Registry Defraggers monthly, sometimes reasonable video effects edits (sliding, fading, dragging intact) & trim indexing on low ram installs - that's all.

In all honesty i have had no issues with tuneup , my system runs smoothly and cleanly !
I don't let it touch the registry

Ok folks , i managed to find the updates for touchpad drivers and have installed them, i have to say it still jumps etc but that is largley due to brushing the touchpad with thumbs or sleeves. so disabling the touchpad whilst using mouse is definately the way ahead .
on reflection i have decided to not risk lois lapptop to tuneups and shall try auslogistics ,im sure i can config them to defrag weekly .

I second what Gregrocker said about using Auslogics' defrag. I have used it for a long time. It's fast and no issues.

I use Synaptics drivers for my touchpad. I also use the ATI Catalyst drivers for my video. Both are updated more frequently than the Dell ones are. Boohbah, not sure how often Lenovo updates theirs, but I suspect the same.
