Crazy - Microsoft Word icon has replaced all icons Start menu
Hi,
I just downloaded MS Office 2010. Now, all the office icons - Excel, PowerPoint etc ..... and all the icons in Start menu and my desktop such as Norton 360, iTunes, Quicktime Player, Calculator etc. show up as the Microsoft Word icon. In other words all the original icons are missing and the only icon I see - for all software programs is Microsoft Word. I had a virus on my laptop a few weeks ago and I deleted a folder .... or something ... but I'm not sure what it was. Can someone please tell me what I deleted and how I can get it back? Thanks, M |

Try this program it will help with the file associations.
FileTypesMan - Alternative to 'File Types' manager of Windows You can re-assign them to the correct application. -WS |

Thanks WindowStar, I'm not sure what to download though. This is what happened when I clicked on the link. I'm sorry, I forgot to tell everyone that I'm not Windows savvy.

Don't know about that. You could do something like this maybe.
Default File Type Associations - Restore And try to rebuild the icon cache. Icon Cache - Rebuild No idea what the folder was you "deleted" when you had an infection, or if you're still infected. Probably should run sfc/scannow also. SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker |

Default File Type Associations - Restore is what I was thinking about. Huge Thanks!

Found a fix, at least for me...
I have seen this error with two laptops now...wouldn't be too surprised if there's an update on its way from Microsoft to fix it.
I have seen on other forums recommending that you delete and re-create the user account, but there is a much faster fix. It involves editing the registry, so if you're not comfortable doing that, find someone else who is. ![]() Open the registry editor (regedit.exe) and navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk If your icons are all Microsoft Word, you probably do not see a key under the above path called OpenWithList. Right click on the .lnk key and choose "New > Key". Type in OpenWithList and press Enter. Now logout and log back in and the problem should be fixed. At least, that's what worked for me. Good luck! |
