I was going out of town for 4 days and ended up with nothing.

So I thought instead of returning the defective one and then having to wait on the money, why don't I give them another chance. So I called Dell back and said that I wanted to exchange systems again instead of getting a refund. The guy had to go to a supervisor but said they would do the exchange.

So tonight I get a call from them to give me the specs on the new one. He said that the HD screen was no longer available on the Studio 1558, or something like that. He said they were going to upgrade me to a XPS 16 and increase the memory from 6GB to 8GB. I'm going from a black laptop to a red one.

Now that I no longer have a deadline I can afford to wait a bit on a new one.
Well, that is good to hear. While Dell has its issues at times, Dell and HP I haven't seen many problems they weren't willing to try and resolve in a reasonable manner. Of course, does not mean other people won't try and jack them in the process, that is the usual issues a lot of companies have.

I haven't been much of a fan for Gateway though. Toshibas are okay, but from a business stand point, they just never really struck me as 'great', but better than the Gateway based computers.

Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) SP1

I've had my HP laptop for around 5 years. Since I put an SSD in it, it would give most new laptops a run for it's money. HP is NOT junk.

HP is coming back strong from several issues in their DV series books. I will never trust Dell because they are strictly a lowest bid company. It doesn't seem to matter to them how well their products work or how they last, as long as they are cheap.

I have been really impressed by ASUS laptops lately, having handled three of their netbooks, seven of their notebooks, I have decided that they will be the makers of my next laptop. They have a solid feel, stay cool to the touch, and a lot of nice features that I enjoy.

Before this, I have had four HP laptops, two I was impressed with, two had issues. What sold me off them lately is that I followed their instructions to fix a heat issue in my DV9000 laptop, and flashed to a current BIOS, which killed the computer entirely. They would not fix it for free, and it would cost ME $200 to send it in and have the BIOS replaced.

Three companies which you should consider when buying a laptop are:

Which one depends upon your needs and desires but all three have good reputations.

I have one Toshiba and one Asus and am well-pleased with both.

Linux CENTOS 7 / various Windows OS'es and servers

Hi there
Before deciding on what laptop to get turn the question THE OTHER way around

1) what do you want to do on it
2) Is is a "Desktop" replacement or a mobile computing device that you take when you travel
3) Do you actually NEED to watch hours of video on a large LAPTOP HD 1080p screen or can you output this to another external Monitor or TV when you want to watch this stuff at home.

4) Weight and SIZE is KING these days if you travel -- you don't want to put a laptop in a baggage hold and lugging a 15 / 16 inch screen laptop around is NO fun.

If your needs are more portable go for a nice small NETBOOK - up the memory to 2GB -- they work fine for most purposes -- I have a nice ACER ASUS ASPIRE 10.1 inch netbook -- it's great -- I can even run VMWARE on it too and it has an HDMI output if you want to output to large screens. You can run Photoshop etc too on these as the newer processors they put in these are fine now.

I installed W7 Ultimate 32 bit on mine and changed first to a 7200 rpm 320 GB disk and finally an SSD with no probs whatsoever.

I play my DVD's via VLC when I'm on the road having first used AnyDVD to to extract the DVD images to an external USB 1TB disk. (You can get external DVD for netbooks but it isn't worth it if you have another machine where you can clone the DVD).

Cost of the netbook -- around 350 USD so even if it gets lost or broken cheap to replace.

I've given up lugging around large laptops anymore --those days are OVER for me --- honestly treat yourself to a nice beautiful REALLY large HIGH QUALITY monitor when you are home rather than spend money on a HUGE HEAVY laptop.

BTW if you also put in an SSD on a netbook you can really make even these small computers fly like greased lightning . A bit more expensive of course but really good performance can be got from these -- don't write of the idea of a Netbook -- I did for ages until I got one myself -- My arms etc wished I'd done it a LONG time earlier.

Incidentally even the most two thumbed "Non Engineer" can change a HDD in most laptops -- usually just 4 screws on the bottom of the case and the HDD just pulls out of a slot.
